The Movie Page

I love movies. I generally avoid television because I resent its ability to suck me into their neverending steam of spoon fed entertainment. Films, on the other hand, last a set duration and, as they are purchased on an individual basis, selected for higher quality. This reasoning holds true for my feeling towards All-You-Can-Eat Buffets.

Depending upon my mood, I like all sorts of cinema. I've even amassed an embarassingly large DVD collection including everything from artsy films (City of Lost Children) to mindless comedy (BASEketball), from romance (Say Anything) to action (The Matrix), but my all-time favorite film is one that make you think and impresses you with the power of man's will and desire: Gattaca.

Say Anything ( links: Say Anything Page )

I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic and when I was in high school I loved the film Say Anything because Lloyd Dobler seemed to epitomize what I wanted to be. When I got to Rochester Institute of Technology and a member of Computer Science House, I was exposed to Mosaic (and later Netscape) and saw how people devoted pages to their favorite bands and films, so I decided to do the same. When I learned about scripting, I created a quotes page. That was in 1996 or so and it hasn't changed significantly since then, but it still gets hits periodically.

My DVDs ( links: My Collection )

I spend a lot of money on media. Considering how little time I actually spend watching movies, the quantity of dvds I own doesn't make sense, so I try to focus more on books and music, but I have occaisional relapses. It's sort of my way of appreciating art.

On2.com

My first client as an employee of Tallan was a company called On2.com. Out of their headquarters in Tribecca, NY has come full screen, full motion streaming video in the form of their VP series client codecs and TrueCast servers. Their compression technology has always been impressive and keeps improving.

We built the initial version of their site using a mixture of Java technologies, JavaScript, Perl and even Unix shell scripts to manage and provide a shell through which to access their video content. That site disappeared when they recognized that their strength was in video technology rather than content development.
