I've read all six books of the original Dune series and they are
excellent works. The first three books were beautiful in the
layers upon layers of plotting and agendas woven together to
yield a complex yet coherent storyline. The last books,
Heretics and Chapterhouse,
were a bit of a let-down as they primarily
concern sex and sexuality as a weapon. I don't feel that this
topic warranted the attention given.

However, my favourite of this series was God Emperor
for its insights into the mind and motivation of man.

In early 2003 I was introduced to Ender's Game and I loved it! This book explores scenarios in
which frighteningly intelligent children are manipulated by
adults with good long-term intentions to horrible things in the
name of saving humanity.

When I reached the end of this book, I wanted to cry for the boy
and all that was done to him. We are taken inside the mind of
effective military strategists and come away having learned that
in war, you cannot afford morals or the luxury of being fair.
In war you win at all costs and the ends must justify the means.
This is probably the root of the strongest argument in favor of
pursuing diplomacy until war is determined inevitable.

The Objectivist Philosophy resonated within me. When I read
The Fountainhead, it was like someone had
committed my views to paper (and even surrounded it with a
story). Ayn Rand's novels certainly don't cover everything, but
she has made an effort to remedy that situation with her essays.
Her writing style, although I found it mostly enjoyable, gets
quite preachy at times and I found myself skipping over large
chunks at times. As a rule of thumb, if it sounds like she's said
it before, she has and you can skip (or skim) the next few pages.

The core of the philosophy is strikingly similar to the core of
capitalism (and very much a reaction to communism): the world runs
smoothly when you pay for that which you value. It's really qute
simple.

I first read the book Bridge To Terabithia
in about first grade, and it gets better with every reading.
It's a quick read and the story touches me. In a short work,
Katherine Paterson develops substantial characters and makes you
care deeply about them. I don't want to write any more about it
because one must experience it for themselves and it wouldn't do
for me to spoil any aspect of the story, so suffice it to say
that Terabithia celebrates imagination and the
bond that grows between friends.
