As a member of HEARING_IMPARED notes, I have come across a
discussion concerning NOTES readage by deaf and hard of hearing
students.
It seems some people are afraid to enter any other conference
besides HI because of a fear they will be treated differently because
of their disability. I feel we should do something to make them more
welcome to other conferences, and I feel this topic will help bridge
the gap between hearing amd deaf students on this campus.
Post any ideas or questions concerning the deaf community here at
RIT.

Hi! I guess I'll go first.
I'm hard of hearing (as many of you guys know) and I've found that
since I've joined other "notes topics" (as I call them) I've met a few
hearing people that I normally won't have met. I haven't been treated
any differently, just been treated like a human being. I don't see how
other deaf people can be afraid of joining in on another note just
because of their disability. The way I look at it is that there are
sooooo many people who read these notes that they aren't goingto care
one way or the other about what you are just as long as your friendly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A topic like this one is a good step in the right direction...
The best way to combat Stereotyping and Prejudices is to
slowly fade out all the fuss we put on our differences. Instead of
having Hearing Conferences and Non Hearing Conferences, we can evolve
into Conferences. Being Deaf or Hearing Impaired or Hearing becomes
just another trait... like brown hair or red hair. With no real
stigmas attatched.
This topic can serve as a kind of "bridge", if you will, between
two "different" worlds. This topic marks the Common Ground. In time,
I feel, most people will outgrow the need for this Distinction between
Hearing and Non and Impaired... when that time comes, this topic will
have served its purpose... And so better it will be for us all.
I believe that people can be allowed, even encouraged to be
different and unique from others... but to over-emphasize our
differences is to invite stereotyping.
Resist the temptation to think of Hearing and Hearing Impaired
as separate species. Resist isolating yourself to "your own kind."
We are all one kind... HumanKind. Draw strength from those to whom
you can relate, but do not isolate yourself from everyone else
because of it. There is a fine distinction between Racial Pride
and Xenophobism. (Not that I suggest it is a matter of race, but
these words seem to be the closest I can find).
May this topic serve as a vehicle for understanding... and for
this forementioned pride. But please, do not let it become a
"bubble" where we try to shove all our NTID people... for that was
not the intention of this topic.
LEV is unity. May this topic serve to further strengthen those
bonds that exist between us.

I was born hearing, became hard of hearing, became Deaf. For th
ose of you that are wondering, yes, I am legally Deaf. I don't
think I ever really worried about whether or not people would treat me
differently, but then again, I have a gift. I can
live in both worlds. Not too many people can do that. I also think
who I am and where I come from helps. I've always been outgoing and
talkative. Also, I never tell people I am Deaf until I have known them
for a while (and unless you see my hearing aids, I'm told it's kind of hard
to tell). By the time I mention it, the other person already likes me
for me. The only time I have had a problem with being Deaf is at home,
when people see my hearing aids (when I wear pony tails), think I'm an easy
target, and jump me. Thats when I show them that being Deaf doesn't mean
you are dumb, or weak.

Whoops...I got cut off. I think that so far, the vax has been doing a
great job because it doesn't rely on hearing or deafness. It relys on
socialism. Therefore, once we make friends on the vax, it doesn't
matter whether or not they are hearing or Deaf, the way real life
should be but often isn't. Perhaps we can motivate more Deaf
individuals to take part in the vax conferences, and help Skippy over
in Hearing Impaired notes, help him encourage more hearing impaired and
Deaf people to join other conferences. You'd be surprised at how many
of them are already doing that.

Ok, I've been thinking bout that MTV commercial, I think Liz is wrong.
The commercial isn't saying "beware the people who can't hear sounds'
it says 'beware the people not moved by sound', and yes, there is a
difference.
A person who is moved by sound is one who gets caught up in the emotion,
the feelings associated with the music. These are yer everyday people
who when they hear fast paced music get excited, or slow deep music
associate depression or closeness. Music in horror films, designed to
heighten the suspense is another example.
A person not moved by sound, as the commercial intends, is an
unemotional cold hearted bastard uncapable of feeling. I agree, Beware
him.
But by saying that singles out the deaf communtiy and says beware them,
no. Most 'deaf' students I've met hard of hearing, and they can hear
sounds and they get moved by them too. I haven't met a completely deaf
person. And even them, with no concept of sound, aren't necessarily
singled out, because they know and recognize the feelings but in a
different way. Facial expression, body language etc.

Why are you afraid to let people who you have just met think you are
deaf? I myself am profoundly deaf, with 115+ loss in each ear.
However, miraculously can hear with my hearing aid and speak very
well. (thanks, mom and dad, for starting me with a hearing aid at six
weeks old!)
Well, anyway, people don't know I'm deaf until either I tell them or
they see my hearing aid...which is often...I'm not ashamed of it. This
is my first time in a deaf school, as I was always living in the
hearing world....this is all new to me...but I like it anyways and plan
on functioning well in both of them.
In conclusion, don't hide your deafness. If the person doesn't like
you cause of hte deafness, that's his loss.

yeah, I agree too.
but life doesn't always conform to logic. Morally, everyone (well,
most people) know that it's not right to judge people by appearances,
but people do anyway. I've had people dead set against me just
because I couldn't hear, and they didn't even know me. I had teachers
in high school who made it very clear to me, in front of the whole
class, me never having said a word, that they would under no
circumstances go out of their way for me. It sucks going through your
school years with your name in bright red in the gradebooks. I can see
how it would be helpful, but it also brings up the issue, and sometimes
that forces the teacher (and often the other students) to single you
out. No one likes that, and other people were intimidated by me
because of that.
But I have found that if no big deal is made of it, I can relax, (and I
do better at everything when I'm relaxed and not so paranoid), and
people will see me for who I really am.
I'm not yelling at anyone or trying to say this is the only way, and
I'm not embarrassed anymore. Just telling it as I see it

I agree with Jenn.
I like the person who posted two posts back (sorry forgot your name).
I can hear sounds, somewhat distorted but nevertheless can hear 'em,
and I can talk as clear as they come. I, too am profoundly Deaf in
both ears without my hearing aids. I'd like to say that being Deaf,
especially in work situations or club situations, where the individuals
are predominantly hearing, doesn't matter but it does. I feel like I
have to first, prove myself, then I can tell them. Like in high
school. I never told my teachers I was Deaf and used to sit in the
back of the class, understand everything that was going on, and ace the
class. When the teacher's finally learned I was Deaf, they treated me
no differently. However, when I went to one class and told the teacher
straight out that I was Deaf, she places me in the front middle of the
room, making exaggerated motions with her lips when she talks, and
constantly stopping class to ask me if I was getting all of it.
Basically treating me like a retard. Therefore, in some situations, I
don't tell anyone. Not only is it not their business, they don't have
to know.

profoundly deaf, and liek you, am blessed with a good voice. While the
teachers may mouth a little mroe, I'm always honest with them and tell
them, or at least that was in high school. Now, I haven't told anyone
yet but if I have a problem, I will. If someone acts differenlty just
because you are deaf, just tell them to stop nicely, or explain to them
what they are doing. I find that this method works effectively. As
for proving yourself, why? The only person who you have to prove
yourslef to is yourself.

True...and so far, I haven't felt any need to tell anyone that I was

sometimes telling them nicely to stop exaggerating their lips
while they talk doesn't work. In which case, I feel like bashing their

As Ewokie knows, I hate revealing my true identity. So, I am a
profoundly deaf person who doesn't even use hearing aids (they don't
help me at all.) Sometimes I really mingle among the crowd and nobody
would know that I am deaf until somebody singles me out for
conversation. This will sound cruel or uncaring, but I used to try to
avoid stereotyping by attempting to "look normal" whenever I go out in
the public. However, since I came to RIT, I have learned to embrace my
deafness and I no longer have any need to try to go around acting like
any hearing person. I am a deaf person and I will remain a deaf

Here I am posting in a sub where I'm not deaf and it says "The Deaf
Community"..so sue me! ;>
Anywayz, I never experienced being around people are deaf until I
visited here (back in spring to see the campus). I think it's great to
experience this! Now that I am living everyday with the hearing
impaired, and talking to them, it gets me used to it, so I don't feel
uneasy at all. I feel uneasy about a lot of things, but I am glad that
this is helping me overcome that feeling with anything of the nature.
Anyone wanna teach me sign language?

That, my lad, is a gift. You have to be born with it (or 5'1 and
under).
Seriously though, there seems to be a lot of interest on your part to
learn how to sign, so if I can arrange it, I would be happy to give
lessons to all of you at one time (shutup). When I walk into class you
can all stand up and say..."We Love you Miss Pagan..."

Here is one more participant for this topic, me, although I am
reluctant to give away details of my secret identity. The Joker knows
me. I am profoundly deaf by birth and got my first hearing aid by the
age of four. I still have problems in understanding even my parents.
"Wha...? Oh you mean I have to take out the garbage? Or to vacuum the
carpet?" GArbage or carpet...they looks same in lip reading. The aids
are not a big help.
Then I came in RIT. It feels like a complete metamorphing of me. I
wonder if my parents will know me as the old same boy who cannot
understand (garbage/carpet) when I go back for the Thanksgiving break.
Anyway, this is a good topic. Keep it up as long as I am here. I will
be around for five years!
:)
