Not the fallen lamps, not the smashed television or scattered portraits of relatives, not even the sharp, deep blood stains in the carpet. His bookshelf of philosophy was cracked and dead, the pages torn and littered across the floor mockingly. They blew like leaves in the open wind. For a moment, he raised his head. He could hear ticking. It had been her favourite possession. He froze, almost with a glimmer of hope at the familiar sound and rose out of his chair. He looked across the livingroom of their apartment, and could only see remains. But he could hear it - the clock given to them on their anniversary by Alison's mother. In a flash of impulse, he began to dig through the debris, ignoring the cuts from their sharp edges. =="Mutie-lover!" they shouted as they smashed inside, "Got a *&^%ing Genejoke fer a lover!== He clawed through the layers, through the dust and smoking pieces, searching, trying to find it. ==They weren't going to listen. You just stay back, nice an' peaceful, an maybe we'll talk." "Talk. Good. Good." Sol backed off, away from Alison. "Let's talk."== He picked up the clock. It was a little bent, but still ticking. The glass was marred, but it could be fixed. It was a one of a kind, a chinese antique. ==Alison was being prodded off into the corner with rifles and sticks. Sol just stood there, hands raised. "We don't have to do it like this... we don't..." She must have bumped a lamp off the table, because it fell and broke. Half a second later, somebody shot her. Sol tried to help her, but he was too far away now. They beat him and kicked him down, and they were doing the same to her. She was glowing with light, and trying to push them away. "Stop! Stop it!" he yelled, but the tall man just grabbed him by the hair as he lay on the ground and said, "Be glad you're human, or we woulda killed you, too."== Sol picked up the clock, and it stopped ticking. He examined it carefully. Maybe if he could just... if he could only... he gave it a gentle shake. A piece fell off the back, and a long stream of her blood ran out of the mechanism. =And she was gone= Sol yelled deep from his chest. He threw down the clock, down onto the hard kitchen floor where it shattered. He slammed through the livingroom, and grabbed his volumes of literature and philosophy. Still yelling, he threw them out the window, out through the broken window, an armful at a time. He just yelled, and yelled, smashing the pictures still left on the mantlepiece, indiscriminantly. He picked up a chair and hurled it against a mirror again and again until both chair and mirror were in shards. Standing, breathing hard, he looked around the apartment, looking for something else to throw. As his head jerked around, his eye caught a glimpse of a portrait on the floor. Gently, slowly, he knelt down, picking up the frame and brushing away the dust and glass. The picture was torn, but he could still see her smiling face, hear her gentle laugh as he took her picture into his hand. It didn't matter. How could anything matter? He'd called the police, but he lived too far downtown for them to come out at this time of morning. Dammit. He couldn't even remember what happened. They shot her. They beat her. He felt the side of his face, which was starting to swell. He walked through the street in his bare feet. He hadn't locked his apartment. As if it mattered. There was nothing left worth stealing. There wasn't anybody to help her. He lived in an apartment building, and there was no one to help her. He clenched his fist. Had they known she was a mutant? Had they ignored the screams and turned their heads the other way because of it? Were they afraid? So afraid that they would just let that happen? Sol forced it out of his mind. He didn't want it there. He was afraid of what he might remember if he tried too hard. He went down a little side-street, and another. No direction. Just walked. A bell chimed. He looked up to see a church, a small church set back from the other buildings. There was a light on inside, and as he came up the steps, he found that the doors were open. The doors fell closed softly behind him. He walked quietly across the floor in his bare feet, down the central aisle. The light of the night sky illuminated the church through the stained-glass windows. The candles were lit on the alter, and Sol approached it humbly, genuflecting and kneeling before it. He clasped his hands together in prayer, but the verses wouldn't come. He remembered being here before, many Sundays, many holidays. He remembered when they'd been married here, he remembered how pure and radiant she'd looked in her wedding gown. He remembered how nervous he'd been, and how his best man, Sam, didn't show up until the very last minute. He remembered all the promises he made to her, and how he'd meant every one. =="...to honor, to serve, to love and to protect..."== He remembered when he kissed her, so proud of himself for successfully throwing back her veil that he bumped his nose with hers. Twice. But they got it right eventually, and the church was filled with a combination of laughing, cheers, and applause. It was the happiest day of his life. He remembered the reception after, how they danced forever, how he'd held her hand the entire time. She was kind, caring. Forgiving. She was a special human being, and you can have faith that the Lord, in his mercy, shall care for her." And if we really get rowdy, we can use hydrogen. The Coin Game: Each person gets a chance to be the coin seeker. We take a room and cover up all the windows so it will be pitch black. Then we strew a few hundred dollars in nickels, dimes and quarters around the room. Then we toss in five pennies. The "coin seeker" goes into the room with all the lights out and tried to find the pennies! Oh, I forgot the best part. While he's trying to find the pennies, there are five other people in the room with baseball bats who get to smack him until he find all of the pennies. Spin the Bottle: Set everything up like spin the bottle, but when the bottle stops on someone, the spinner gets to smash the bottle over his head! Hide and Go Seek: Choose someone as "It". He hides in a closet and counts to 100. Meanwhile, the others use the nailguns left over from "Pin the Tail on the Sherm" to seal the door shut while they go out barhopping.
