I would like to post a little philosophy here today, for I consider my beliefs to be learned... through discourse, through conjecture, and of course, much soul-searching (Sol-searching, if you prefer). I do not come lightly across my beliefs (usually) and I just wanted to share with you all my thoughts on LEV, and the meaning (for me) behind it. I do not wish to impose my views, so I have included a Form-Feed before the actual post... I'm sure many of you have heard quite enough already. But for those it may interest, or for those who still don't understand what's been going on, this may, in some part, provide insight. As you may know, my view has traditionally been that only 2 Laws are needed... No Swearing, and No Personal Attacks. To tell you the truth, I only really ever subscribed to the Second... the first was just a bi-product of ISC policy. If Swearing were offensive, then it would automatically violate Rule #2 - it could be considered Fun at the Expense of Another, and thus, potentially, a Personal Attack. It's an all-encompassing little rule, isn't it? Anyway, there's been all kinds of debate lately... rules are considered necessary, strictness and order doubly so. Why? For the common good. I say "nay," but then I think what Rochester would be like with no rules. Murders? Rapes? Robbery? Littering? I mean, okay... it would be pretty messy. That's not cool. And the point is very strong. Very valid. Without an iron fist to keep things in place, chaos seems all that's left, doesn't it? I needed to think hard about that. I believe in my philosophy, but I must never be above re-examining it. That's what I've been doing a LOT of lately. Part of Harmony is Open-Mindedness. I try to remember that bit. I wanted to re-confirm the validity of my philosophy. After much careful thought, I came back to the origin of that philosophy - the philosophy of the 2 Holy Laws. And it's been a long time. I'd almost forgotten. But the reasoning went thus - people are basically good. Deep down, beneath all their pain, all their anger and hurt and confusion, there is good. Some people lose sight of it, but it's there. In a society of total freedom, potential would be very great. No more restrictions, universal acceptance. Anarchy wouldn't break out because the people would have no reason to cause it. No greed, no trying to take advantage of the system (which would have no rules) because everyone would follow the One most Important rule... No fun at the Expense of Another. People who BELIEVE the Philosophy would put the needs of others in perspective with their own. What use would there be in exploiting others? If you did, then you never really believed in the philosophy, did you? People could give each other the benefit of the doubt freely without fear of being stabbed in the back. No one would stab each other in the back because that's personal gain at the expense of another... a Personal Attack. Anarchy wouldn't exist, because if it is harmful to others, those involved, by belief in the Philosophy, would find away to stop that harm (out of respect for those who are harmed). If everyone followed and believed that simple rule, we could all have Levity and Unity and Acceptance and all the other good stuff, all those excellent things that have become like dirty words around here lately. Someone could say, "Fine, take away all the rules and there will be chaos!" Perhaps... but only if those involved don't follow that one most Holy Law. Is the Real World ready for that? Sadly, no, I don't think so... not yet. Someday, we will be ready. And I want to help that day come by practicing what I say. I'm not always successful, but I must give myself the benefit of the doubt, too, and assume that one day, I, too, shall be wiser than I am today. The world is not ready. But this conference is not the world. This conference was meant to be a model. We could show that it was possible. People who believe and follow the Holy Laws can live in peace. They can have freedom and acceptance, and it can work. Those people who believe could come here and MAKE it true, as I have tried, as the Original Members of the Society for the Furtherment of Levity tried. It doesn't always work, but I believe in us, I have faith because I give the benefit of the doubt that one day, we shall all understand, and I have faith in the inherent good of all people. Giving up that philosophy, saying that people must be forcably kept in check suggests that WE CAN'T TRUST THEM. That they are naturally inclined to be "evil" if we leave them the choice. That they are naturally inclined to cause Chaos if we don't force them to be good. I cannot accept that... and that is why I feel so strongly. But, of course, through my own Philosophy, I must give the benefit of the doubt. And I must continue to be open to other views, for those people that offer them only want to IMPROVE Lev Society. It is their good nature that causes them to seek a better way, and regardless of any of the rest, I can take heart in the fact that they are trying. Not the end of my search by any means... I believe that not all people are inherently good, nor bad, but a mix of the two. While the world and model you describe would be nice, I beleive they will never be. And in beleiving they will never be, I force myself to face life on its level. In a Vaxlandia post, you described your encounter with your other half. You fought him, and drove him away, etc. Thats not true with me. The person who is typing right now is a mixture of attitudes and beliefs, which can be represented by personalities. Tas is my misheivous, fun loving part. Garren is my subdued more thoughtful part of me. But there are others. Ones that like to inflict apin, ones that wish nothing to do with the world, ones that abhor violence, ones that wish to dominate, and still others who wish nothing more than to obey. All of these are me, and I accept them all. I subdue to an extent my 'evil' personalities to the same extent I subdue my 'good' ones, and I have found a middle ground. One that allows me to survive in different environments. Most of us are the same way. Different parts of us are stronger than others, but it is the mix that determines us. And because I accept my 'dark halves', understand what they are capable of, I beleive rules are necessary. Like it or not, might does make right, but also makes wrong. And I agree with you Sol, in that if everyone acted according to your rule, there would be no problem. But the ones that refuse to force there own set of rules on us. And we have little choice in the matter. Sol, I believe you would say something of the effect of 'Don't sink to their level.' I would sink to their level, not because I really want to, but because I beleive it necessary. And my darker sides allow that 'sinking'. And so I must also suppress my better sides, lest they rebel and go crazy while sinking. Its a balance, in which the darker sides are given some free rein, but held back, and the same with the better sides. All know they must cooperate lest the whole collapse. Good is better. Good is stronger. Why? Because what we term as "evil" doesn't work. It's easy to see. People working toward a common goal works better than a single person trying to usurp power for him/herself. That person will be power-hungry, and through experience, the others will come not to believe the sincerity of that individual's motives. By taking self-serving purposes first, that person has alienated those who stand to suffer as a result of that greed. The "evil", power-hungry, self-serving person will slowly destroy any friendships he has... for trying to gain at a friend's expense does that. This person will alienate more and more people, having no closeness, and no true friends. He may try to aquire more, but he shall only continue the process on them, alienating them too. Soon, any gain he MIGHT have had from taking advantage of others ("evil") is gone, for he has burned away his friends like an oven burning coal. And then he has not even the benefit... that sacrifice of good gained him little in the end. That person would inevitably suffer extreme stress from all the people he has made into enemies... and lack of any real friends would only add to this. No one will trust a backstabber. The person would deny this, and try to prove it wrong by making more friends. It would not last. He would backstab them too, and feed into the very stress he is trying to relieve. One of two things must happen... the person MUST change to alleviate the damage to himself (if this is still possible considering all the bad that is known) or... The person will die from stress, or be so alienated from everyone and everything that he will no longer matter. And what are we left with? Good. Good is peace. Good is the norm. All conflict must resolve into peace sooner or later. All things move toward the Good, for evil is self-destructive, and in time, can only kill itself. It is as constant and strong (some would say stronger, for over time, none can escape the effects of entropy) as any other force in the universe. I think its nice to beleive that evil will 'turn on itself and thus destroy itself' and that is very true. Evil does that to itself. But not as a whole. It does it individually. Or in small groups. But evil as a whole will never topple. Why? Because with each new generation of men (and women) born, evil is born again. It can't be killed. Of course, now you also have to look at the fact that one cannot exist without the other. By the definition of good, there must be evil. Kill one, you kill both. Nature seeks a balnce in all things, and entropy fights it every step of the way. Its easy to say that if you take one away, the other automatically wins, but I disagree. take away entropy, and the balance is reached, but at what cost? If there is a balance, there can be no change. Things stagnate. Take away the balancing effect, and what do you get? Total destruction. No, they both are at all times necessary. I agree with you in yer ideas that good is better, more usual, more harmonizing, but evil is just as strong, but in different ways. Good generally has fewer peices (i mean by that there are less good forces in terms of number) than evil does. Good works with those peices, builds them up, makes them power houses. Evil on the other hand uses masses of peices, but doesn't care about them. Its uses the person until it rots and dies, and each person isn't all that strong, but because there are so many of them, it balances out the few strong good peices. Now, lets discuss how they attack each other. The balancing effect of nature, like good, builds. And it keeps on building. It does nothing destructive unless it is necessary to continue building. Entropy attacks what the balancing effect builds. In nature, entropy cannot attack the builder itself, because they are forces, it attacks what was built. But Evil can attack the builder, namely the good person. And it does. It disrupts that which is harmonious and attacks those that would restore order. Good does return fire. Good steps up its efforts at building in hopes of out racing the other. And evil steps up its efforts. And so on and so forth. Now, this is where my basic stancein life comes from. Good is cool. I like order and harmony and fixing things that is broken or could just plain be improved on. But I refuse to be a target dummy for the 'evil'. Unlike good, I will fight back and I do. But since good doesn't give you the strength for that, one must turn to evil. But tempered evil. I am in touch with my darker sides because I need them. I understand them. And I use them. And for the most part, they have served me well. My good side builds when it can and my dark side fends off attack or attacks as necessary. Now, of course, as i use my dark side, my dark side uses me. An unfortunate reality, but one none the less. That is why I get impatient, upset, sometimes even furious. And I hurt people. And I don't like it. But, I consider it necessary. I need that strength to survive, even though it be a double edged sword. Now some of you may be thinking about something I said a few paragraphs ago and shaking yer head. If I don't miss my guess, its the part where i said that good lacks the ability to fight evil. By good's very nature in the definitions we have used, it cannot. If you beleive in Jesus, you'll recall he said to turn the other cheek, keep doing good stuff, and if they kill you, well at least you died doing good. Of course he turns right around and contradicts himself by banishing demons and the like, but hey, if you believe in him, you gotta remember he was human too. First I had to get braces. And just slapping them on wasn't enough. Oh no..... first they had to put this sadistical little device called a palate splitter in my mouth. Aptly named, as that was exactly what it did. Every day someone had to stick this little key in my mouth and turn this little wheel. (Kinda like a rack in reverse) After a couple of months with that, it came off and on went the braces. Two years I had to deal with those f*&$%)# things. Finally, they came off. Then I had to get a retainer so my mouth wouldn't move back to it's former position. "You'll need this on for about five years," he said. Hehehehe. Thanks doc. So I wore it for about three years and finally gave it up. It's been about another three years since then and I don't think my teeth have moved since then. Unfortunately, I still have this little band of metal directly behind my bottom front four teeth. It's still there, and I've been toying with the idea of removing it myself with some pliers, as I really don't wish to visit Dr. Sadism again. So, you have something to look foward to. A good chunk of your life in the hands of your friendly neighborhood orthodontist.
