The cursor blinks at the end for a few seconds. New text appears, as above, a few lines below that text. EVEN MISTAKES. TRANSITION SEQUENCE - MOVING SHOT After a few seconds, move forward into the screen. There is a flash of white light. Fade quickly back into a computer generated tunnel. Fly through the tunnel, and a distant, but very dense landscape of geometric objects and light patterns appears. There is energy flowing everywhere. Rivers of light, walls of lightning. There are also polygonal clouds hovering over the landscape. Clouds and matrices of point light sources are flying by. As the landscape comes towards us, a highly reflective metallic logo flies over to the camera viewpoint. It reads: TRON Then, soon after we see the TRON logo, cloud formations from the ground below line up just right to read: v 2.0 As the logo flies towards us, the CAMERA moves through the "O", towards the landscape, the "v 2.0" once again turns into random cloud shapes. The landscape continues to get closer, seemingly faster now. EXT. COMPUTER WORLD - NIGHT - WIDE, MOVING SHOT Off in the distance, towards the horizon is a grouping of horizontal and vertical light beams. We approach it, flying close to the ground, with polygons and circular shapes of light flying towards us at astounding speeds. We see a vast landscape of hard angles, and solid shades of gray, outlined in various hues and brightnesses of light. They are all shimmering to some degree. There are crevaces, and tall sky-scraper like objects. A group of computer generated vehicles fly past, all of them glowing. Continue to fly over to: I/O CENTER This area has raised circular platforms, all with ramps down to central platforms. There are about 50 or so central platforms, each with 8-10 of the raised platforms coming up and off of them. Each of the raised platforms has a colored beam of light eminating from it. Some go straight up, some go off horizontally. The vertical beams are of varying hues between red and blue. The horizontal beams are green and aqua hues. Many of the raised platforms have humanoid figures standing in their beams. I/O PLATFORM GROUPING This I/O center is not completely occupied. There are a few unused horizontal and vertical beam platforms. We see an I/O GUARDIAN in the central platform. He is in good spirits. The programs around him are very busy, moving from one raised platform to another, from horizontal beams to vertical beams, and back again. A humanoid program, LAWSTAT walks up the entrance ramp to the central platform and approaches the guardian. GUARDIAN Greetings program. How may I be of service? LAWSTAT My user wishes interaction. GUARDIAN Who is your user? LAWSTAT George24. GUARDIAN You may pass. Use port 8 to communicate with your user and port 4 to communicate with other programs. Acknowledge? LAWSTAT Acknowledge. LAWSTAT - FROM BEHIND Lawstat walks over to an unused vertical beam. POV moves upwards as he approaches platform 8. him. You can see a stylized "8" glowing on the floor of the platform he is walking to. He stands in the colored beam of light, pulls his glowing DISK from his back and offers it into the beam. Quickly, the beam releases from his hands, and flies vertically upwards, tinting the beam more blueish. The voice of the USER from above speaks. USER (V.O.) Retrieve legal documents. LAWSTAT (shouting) Subject? VOICE Edward Dillinger LAWSTAT (shouting) Confirmed, george24. The disk comes back down from above, and Lawstat grabs it. He then walks over to the other platform. I/O PLATFORM 4 The platform has a stylized "4" glowing on the floor. From this angle, you can see Platform 8 off in the background. Lawstat walks out from Platform 8, down the ramp to the Central Platform, and up the ramp to Platform 4. There is a glowing clipboard like tablet on a podium. This tablet has a VIDEO SCREEN on it. He offers his disk into the horizontal beam eminating from the side of this platform. FEMALE VOICE (polite) Request? LAWSTAT (speaking) Request legal summary for subject Edward Dillinger. VIDEO SCREEN - CLOSE SHOT Easily readable text appears on the Vid screen. The female voice speaks the words as they appear on the screen. The screen reads: SUBJECT: EDWARD WILLIAM DILLINGER USER ID: M324-JA12900B DATA TYPE: HISTORICAL RECORD RELATION: FORMER EMPLOYEE POSITION: SOFTWARE ENGINEER 70-75 SENIOR ENGINEER 75-79 MANAGER 79-80 EXEC VP 80-81 SENIOR EXEC 81-82 DISCHARGED 82 LEGAL SUMMARY: When it was discovered that he had stolen the intellectual property of Kevin Flynn (M982- JA481900A), he was discharged from the company and all of his programs were disabled. END OF PROFILE FEMALE VOICE Request? LAWSTAT Request legal documents for subject. FEMALE VOICE Requested data is being downloaded to your identity disk. (beat) Complete. Request? LAWSTAT End of line. FEMALE VOICE Thank you. I/O PLATFORM GROUPING Lawstat picks his disk up out of the light beam it was in, and walks back over to Platform 8. CUT TO: I/O PLATFORM 8 Lawstat walks back into the beam, and offers his disk to it. He holds his hands out, with the disk in them, and releases the disk into the beam. DISK'S POV - MOVING We then fly upwards through the beam, until the beam dissapates above the cloud level. Viewpoint spins around to show behind us; where we've been. IO platforms are clearly visible on the ground below, with many beams coming out of them, and occasionally, you see another disk flying out of a beam. Pull back to upper sky. Clouds are flying by. Matrices of pixels, and other formations as before are flying by. The POV whips around again, to show the tunnel of light and geometric shapes we're about to fly into. It looks very digital. We eventually get to some mirrored green low-resolution text on a black background. Fade to white then back out to: TERMINAL SCREEN We see the text as before, appear in a database window on a non-descrit windowing system. The window in which the text appears in is titled "LAW S.T.A.T". In another window on the screen is a mug shot of ED DILLINGER, with his name beneath it. The user, GEORGE, moves his mouse cursor, and selects a menu item labeled "Update Documents". Immediately after this, the years on the screen change from "80" to "1980". George then selects "Save out document" from a menu. George then reaches for a mug of steaming coffee, and then leans back into his chair. He looks just like the program Lawstat, in the computer world. He is dressed nicely in a shirt and tie. There are paper documents around his terminal, organized nicely. CUBICLE View from above the cubicle. You see many cubes off to the distance... each one inhabited by someone, working on something. There is a name card outside this one. It reads "George Wells" in large letters, and below it in smaller letters is "george24". Each name card outside each cube is in this format. People are walking past the entrance to the cube occasionally. On the wall in the background, above the cubes, there is a huge shiny ENCOM logo. CUBICLE HALLWAY KEVIN FLYNN and ALAN BRADLEY come into shot, strolling casually, chatting about something, looking into cubicles as they walk past. Alan has a neatly groomed graying goatee, and is wearing cotton pants with a loose long sleeved shirt. Flynn has some scruff on his face, and he wearing almost the same, but his shirt is not tucked in. Alan is talking with his hands. Flynn has his hands in his pockets. ALAN ...and Lora said that they were going to charge us $3000 for a new roof for the cabin, which I thought was... Flynn stops and is mesmerized by the screen for a second. Alan glances into the cube and continues walking, not realizing that Flynn has stopped. ALAN (continuing walking) Hey, wasn't that "the evil" Ed Dillinger on that terminal screen? Alan looks over to where Flynn would have been had he been walking alongside Alan. Alan is briefly confused, then notices Flynn standing at George's cube entrance. GEORGE'S CUBE George turns around when he notices the reflection on his monitor. He notices Flynn staring at his screen. GEORGE Oh, hello Mr. Flynn. FLYNN (dazed) Flynn. Just Flynn. Mr. Flynn is my dad, not me... (very quietly) Was my dad... Alan arrives back at Flynn's side. ALAN Flynn? You okay? FLYNN What? Oh. Yeah. Sorry. Dillinger. Flynn nods to the terminal screen, and Alan turns to look at the screen. Flynn realizes he's in a daze, and tries to regain his composure. FLYNN (to George) Um. What are you working on? GEORGE Year 2000 updates. It's not hard work for us, it's just tedious. I imagine it's quite the opposite for you programmers... FLYNN Tedious... like you say. An awkward silence falls across them. ALAN Back to work? Flynn snaps out of his daze. FLYNN Uh.. yeah. Alan and Flynn nod and continue walking past cubes, and continue on into the distance. ALAN Ed Dillinger... there's a name I haven't heard in years. FLYNN (jokingly over dramatic) Yah. A long time ago. But that time is past. No more Dillinger, no more MCP, and I finally got the credit I deserved. ALAN Seen any remnants of him around? FLYNN Nope. Once you destroyed the formerly mighty "Master Control Program", all of his other little minions erased themselves. ALAN Not me... Tron. FLYNN (casually) Whatever.... (beat) Let's just get some snacks and get back to work. Flynn regains the bounce in his step. They walk down a very long corridor of cubicles, off into the distance. INT. CAFETERIA - DAY - WIDE SHOT FROM ABOVE There are rows and rows of tables, some with people sitting at them, eating food. Along the back wall, there are a row of arcade machines including: "Space Paranoids", "Matrix Blaster", "Flying Discs", and "Light Cycles". They are unoccupied, and displaying something on their screens. Alan and Flynn walk into the cafeteria, and walk past the arcade machines. Flynn looks at them as they walk past them to the snack counter. Alan looks ahead to see LORA BRADLEY, his wife, standing at the snack counter. She is standing near the CLERK behind the counter. She is an attractive woman, wearing glasses, and a white lab coat. Alan smiles when he sees her. SNACK COUNTER Alan and Flynn walk into shot. They start looking around at snacks, trying to decide what they are in the mood for. Lora is about to buy some gum. LORA (To Alan) Hi hon. How's my favorite programmer doing? Lora and Alan hug. Flynn is looking at the rack of snack foods. FLYNN I'm keeping him in-line as usual. Lora and Alan look at Flynn with a "You're being your annoying usual self again" look on their faces. ALAN I'm fine... (looks at Lora), Just getting some snacks... LORA (To Alan) Remember... Meatloaf tonight. Alan and Flynn's eyes light up when she mentions her meatloaf. LORA Don't eat too much of this garbage. Alan nods, and smiles. Lora turns to Flynn. LORA Hey Flynn, How about you write one of your little masterpieces to do this Year 2000 stuff for you, so we can all go off on a vacation down to St. Thomas... I know of a little resort down there... Pineapple Beach... Nice and isolated... away from computers. FLYNN Yeah... Pineapple. That's what I'm in the mood for. FLYNN picks up a bag of dried tropical fruits, staring at the package. He then looks back at the rack of snacks, in deep thought. LORA Are you even listening to me? FLYNN Yeah, yeah.. Write programs down in St. Thomas. LORA (disgusted) You aren't listening to me. ALAN (almost preaching) Why should today be any different than any other day? Flynn brings the dried fruit up to the counter. The Clerk looks up a price on a table and starts to ring up Flynn'S purchase on the cash register.. FLYNN I'm just kidding. I heard ya. You know the drill. The one file or program that this "masterpiece" as you call it, misses will be the one that bites us in the... Flynn is cut-off by the snack-counter clerk. CLERK A dollar twenty-five, please. Flynn hands the clerk a bill and a coin. LORA Well, I gotta get back to work. (to Flynn) Hey, come by and visit me some time. It's been a while. CAFETERIA - WIDE SHOT Lora kisses Alan, and heads off in one directcion down the hallway. Alan and Flynn start walking in the other direction, towards the entrance they came in through. ALAN "Been a while"? I thought you were a permanent fixture inside the computer in your free time. FLYNN Well, ever since the divorce, I haven't brought myself to go down to the Laser Bay and have myself digitized into the computer. ALAN Too many reminders of Reese? They head through the doorway, back into the maze of cubicles. HALLWAY - FRONT SHOT Camera is in front of Alan and Flynn. Behind them on the wall above the cubes is a red neon Recognizer. The cubicle hallways have miscellaeous news clippings, pictures, nametags, and comic strips tacked to them. FLYNN Yeah, well, we did spend the better part of the first three years of our marriage in there. Her artistic skills helped out a lot in the asthetics of the place. Then she wanted us to spend more time in the real world. And I was perfectly happy in there. (beat) We just went our seperate ways. ALAN (understanding) Mmmmm. I'd never be able to let myself be atomized by that laser. The thought of being taken apart and scanned by a computer doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. Alan shudders. FLYNN - CLOSE SHOT FLYNN Come on. It's really not bad at all... It's a little disorienting and uncomfortable for the first few minutes, but once you regain your memory, it's actually pretty fun. (beat) I mean if you think about it, the first time I went into the system was over 15 years ago, and I've gone in with Reese hundreds of times since then. Why should something go wrong now? CUBICLE HALLWAY - ALAN AND FLYNN - FRONT SHOT They both stop walking; pause; and look at eachother simultaneously. They both crack up laughing. ALAN Of course you realize that we're doomed if we wever want to go into the computer again... FLYNN How's that for foreboding, eh? CUBICLE HALLWAY - REVERSE ANGLE Alan and Flynn are walking away. The view is MOVING behind them but not keeping up. ALAN This can only end in fire now. FLYNN Why does that sound familiar? Is it from some sci-fi TV show? ALAN (quietly) I don't think so... (beat) I can't remember. Alan and Flynn start to get some distance betweeen them and the POV. Flynn bounces around, and faces Alan, walking in front of him backwards. FLYNN (excited) Hey, what if VALLEY OF THE GWANGI was the real world, and our world was a movie which the people in VALLEY OF THE GWANGI were watching, in-between lassoing dinosaurs? ALAN (accusitorilly) What are you talking about? Flynn spins back around, and continues walking next to Alan. FLYNN (defeated) ... Nevermind. Alan and Flynn are now out of earshot. They walk to the end of the corridor, and then turn down a side hallway. HALLWAY Alan and Flynn walk into shot, and over to a door. There is a small sign on the door reading: "Computer Lab 1" "Beware the leopard!" There are also two name plates next to the door. They read: "SR. EXEC. KEVIN FLYNN" with "flynn1" beneath it and "DR. ALAN BRADLEY" with "alan1" beneath it COMPUTER LAB - ENTIRE ROOM This is Alan and Flynn's private computer lab. There are desks around the perimeter of the room, with about 8 terminals total. The floor is raised-tile, and there are two rolly chairs, one set on each side of the room. There are various books on shelves, movie posters including "BLUES BROTHERS", "REPO MAN", and "THE BLACK HOLE", and a coffee machine on the counter. The left side is much messier than the right. At the rear of the room sits a pristine "Space Paranoids" machine. It is on, and displaying its attract sequence. On the back wall are a few trophies, with guys olding frisbees over their heads. An Aerobie frisbee is dangling from one of them. Flynn and Alan walk into the room. Flynn goes to the chair on the messy side of the room, and Alan to the other. Alan's computer monitor has a Wham-o frisbee atop it. Flynn and Alan both wake up their terminals from their screen savers, and start typing into them. There are windows up, with code in them. They occasionally move their mouse. ALAN WITH THE LAB OVER HIS SHOULDER We see Alan in the foreground, and Flynn behind him, back to the camera. ALAN Hey, I just got some e-mail from Lora. It says you can come over for dinner if you like; so we can get caught up on old times... FLYNN I just might take you up on that offer. Lora makes the best meatloaf. ALAN I know... Our spice rack's got more spices than most stores... Dissolve to: COMPUTER LAB'S CLOCK It's a mickey-mouse wristwatch clock. The hands show 2:50. The hands move quickly, showing time passing, until the hands show 4:15. Dissolve to: FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL - CLOSE SHOT There is a "Request:" propmpt. Flynn types: FLYNN Retrieve next program in memory CUT TO: FLYNN's FACE Flynn looks confused a little. FLYNN Speak of the devil... FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL - CLOSE SHOT Text starts scrolling onto the screen: PROJECT: System Monitor PROGRAM: Monitor / Controller / Regulator v2 SHORT NAME: MCR/2 AUTHOR: Edward Dillinger Date: 9/23/78 PROGRAMMER'S NOTES: DECIDED TO ABANDON THIS EFFORT, AND GO FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE LESS ARROGANT AND AGGRESSIVE. THIS PROGRAM WANTS TOO MUCH. IT DESTROYED FIVE MEMORY BLOCKS BEFORE I HAD A CHANCE TO SHUT IT DOWN. IT DOESN'T GET US ANY CLOSER TO THE GOAL. -ED ALAN (From across the room) What's up? COMPUTER LAB - ENTIRE ROOM Flynn is deeply engrossed in his screen, as is Alan. Alan looks very busy with what he's doing. He's typing a lot. Flynn is just staring at his screen. FLYNN Hey, check this out. I think I just found one of Dillinger's old programs. ALAN (surprised) What? Alan picks up his frisbee and rolls his chair over to Flynn. While he is rolling over; just before he looks at Flynn's screen, it goes blank. Alan is spinning his frisbee on his finger. FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL - CLOSE SHOT The screen is now blank. FLYNN's FACE Flynn looks very confused and a little worried. FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL AREA The word "TURKEY" appears on Flynn's screen, in the center. Alan rolls over just in time to see it disappear. Then the standard "Request:" prompt appears. FLYNN Uh. ALAN What is it? Flynn is typing a lot on his keyboard. He looks like he's massively engrossed in his work. ALAN (unbelieving) There's nothing there. Did you say "Dillinger"? FLYNN It was here, now it's gone. ALAN (unbelieving) What do you mean "it's gone". It can't do that. What was it anyway? COMPUTER LAB - WIDE SHOT Flynn rotates around in his chair to face Alan. He's sitting hunched over. leaning his elbows on his knees, with an "I'm trying to understand this situation" look on his face. FLYNN Well, from the looks of it, somehow one of Dillinger's programs survived the destruction of the MCP... Somehow. (beat) It was apparently called M-C-R/2. Its description mentioned something about Dillinger abandoning it because it was too aggressive. Alan rotates around in his chair to face Flynn. He leans back in his chair. He then throws his frisbee back behind him and it lands next to his monitor. ALAN I rememeber hearing rumors of older security programs of Dillinger's. I heard that they were too arrogant, and damaged the system, acting almost like a virus, destroying anything that it didn't recognize. (beat) I heard that that's what caused the system crash of '78. ALAN - CLOSE SHOT ALAN (beat) I just assumed those stories were created by Dillinger's ego. I never imagined that they were for real. FLYNN - CLOSE SHOT FLYNN (beat) These machines have been upgraded so many times in the past 15 years... That coupled with all the remodelling Reese and I did, I'd be surprised if it recognizes anything at all in there... ALAN - CLOSE SHOT ALAN What do you suppose an overly aggressive security program is going to do in an environment it doesn't understand, or even vaguely recognize? COMPUTER LAB - WIDE SHOT FLYNN Who knows what programs it might attack or shut down... ALAN I'll make sure Tron knows that this is happening. ALAN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL AREA Flynn nods his head in agreement. Alan rolls over to his terminal, and brings up a window, and types something into it. ALAN (surprised) Tron's not seeing it in the system. Odd. FLYNN This is too wierd. Lemme try something... FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL AREA Flynn rolls over to his terminal, types on it for a while, then rolls to an adjacent terminal, types on it for a while, and again to a third terminal. FLYNN It's still in there... I can almost see it. It's detached itself from us though. We can't directly access it anymore... COMPUTER LAB - WIDE SHOT Flynn pauses. He thinks for a second. FLYNN Not unless we go in. ALAN This _Will_ end in fire. FLYNN I just know I've heard that somewhere before.. ALAN (shrugging) I dunno... (beat) Are you sure you mean "we"? Do you really want me to go in there with you? FLYNN Come on... You know I can't do this without you and your noggin. I'm sure you can get over your fear of the laser and join me in there. Alan pauses, and thinks to himself. He is obviously bothered from the situation. ALAN I'm going down to the the laser bay to talk this over with Lora. (pause) I'll ... I dunno. I'll... I'll meet you down there... FLYNN Okay. I'll be down there in a few minutes. Alan leaves the room, in deep thought. FLYNN We just see Flynn, and the chair behind him where Alan was just sitting. He is speaking aloud, to himself. FLYNN Hmm. I should prepare the programs for our arrival. I hope my Hawk program will still be usable... Flynn starts typing some stuff into the computer. A smile crosses his face. FLYNN Hello little program! FLYNN'S COMPUTER TERMINAL - CLOSE SHOT A new window is opened above all others. It has the name "HAWK" in the title bar. The text in the window reads: HAWK (V.O.) Helper for Assistance With Knowledge. Program ready. It's been a while, Flynn. How can i help you? Flynn then types (and speaks:) FLYNN Prepare for arrival of two users. Response on the screen: HAWK (V.O.) Two users. Acknowledged. Programmer Kevin Flynn and wife Reese Flynn? Flynn then types (and speaks:) (he's a little irritated by that response) FLYNN No, Kevin Flynn and Alan Bradley. LASER BAY - WIDE SHOT Lora is standing by a computer console. She is wearing a hard-hat, goggles, and a white lab coat. She is typing on a computer terminal. On two screens near her are images of a fern plant, with it's leaves rustling. One of them looks elecronic, and the other looks like a video feed. There is a third video screen next to those two, displaying a solid gray. Alan comes down some stairs wearing a hard-hat. He walks over to Lora. LORA'S COMPUTER TERMINAL AREA Lora turns around to see Alan approaching. Alan is deep in thought and visibly distressed. LORA Hi, hon. What's wrong? ALAN Flynn wants me to go into the computer to help him find this rogue program we accidently activated. I know it'll help him out a lot, but I'm still shaky about it. You know how I am about being digitized. VIDEO SCREENS - CLOSE SHOT The fern's leaves rustle a little. The two images are of the same fern. One is computer-generated, the other is live. LORA Hrm... Watch this... LORA'S COMPUTER TERMINAL AREA She hits a few keys, the laser powers up, and HUMS loudly. The image of the fern gets pixellated and dissapears from the top down on the live video feed. The fern is still moving in the breeze while being scanned. On the computer generated image, it looks like the fern is unravelling off to a side, like a sweater with a loose end. The formerly blank video screen displays the fern coming into existance. It looks the same, but its edges are glowing, and it looks more polygonal. LORA - CLOSE SHOT Lora hits a few more keys, then turns to face Alan halfway. LORA Digitizing objects is practically second nature to us at this point. There is so minute of a chance that something will go wrong. ALAN (hesitant) I don't know... LORA Listen, hon, once a month, we change the disk drives that we use to store the molecular images. It really couldn't be any safer. ALAN What if there's a drive crash when I'm in there? LORA On all 8 drives simultaneously? Really... there's nothing to be worried about. Lora puts a hand on his shoulder, in an attempt comfort him. Alan struggles out a smile to her. LORA (excited) This is really cool. Watch this... Lora reaches over, and presses a button on the control panel. EXTRUSION MACHINE This is a machine with a laser that draws down onto a wire mesh platform which drops down into light orange colored gook. As the platform drops, the laser draws down onto the surface, creating a three-dimensional object in the orange gook. We see a three-dimenstional light orange transparent fern materializing out of the light orange gook. Eventually, the wire mesh raises, and the false fern is seen. LORA (V.O.) It uses the data stored in the mollecular image file as a basis for the structure to be constructed in this physical interpretation extrusion machine. LORA - WIDE She looks happy. She hits a few more keys, and the fern comes back into existance in its original state. EXTRUSION MACHINE Lora walks over to the machine, and picks up the fake fern. On her way back over to Alan, she picks up the real fern. She then places them both on some free countertop space near Alan. Alan compares the two. They are identical. He is impressed. ALAN So this is what you're working on now... Impressive. LORA If you go in, I can make one of these of your head. Lora giggles, and Alan smiles, and looks a little relieved. LASER BAY - WIDE Flynn comes down the stairwell, skipping every other step. He walks over to Alan and Lora. FLYNN Greetings! Everything's set on my end. Alan still looks a little weary. FLYNN I'll go first, and I'll meet you in there. LASER SCANNER - WIDE The laser HUM is getting LOUDER. Flynn stands in front of the laser scanner, and faces away from the beam. FLYNN Alan, make sure you face away... It gets really disorienting if you don't. I learned that one the hard way. (to Lora) I'm ready to cross over into the ethereal. Lora walks over to her console, and hits a few keys. Flynn is digitized into the machine the same way that the fern was. He does not stay perfectly still when being scanned. He looks at his hands as they disappear. Flynn shouts over the hum of the machines: FLYNN I forgot how cool this feels! You're going to love this! As he's shouting, his voice SOUNDS more and more DIGITAL. Little by little, Flynn disappears into the laser beam. Alan is a little surprised at how quick it is. ALAN I still don't know about this, Lora. Why don't you come in with us? LORA There's only enough storage space for two people to be digitized. It's all that Flynn would allow for in the budget. Listen, if I thought it was unsafe, would I be encouraging you to go through it? Everything will be fine Alan. Alan smiles and hugs Lora, and gives her a kiss. ALAN I love you, Lora. ALAN'S POV Lora walks back over to the console, and hits a few keys again. Alan is now digitized the same way Flynn was. We follow his bits down. TRANSITION SEQUENCE As before, we go through a tunnel, composed of geometric shapes. When we reach the end of the tunnel, we see matrices of pixels of light, glowing objects, and glowing beams of light in varying colors. We eventually fly through this and appear over a landscape. The landscape is different than the one before. It has fewer beams of light around it, but near the horizon, you can see the structures from the first transition sequences. We eventually arrive at a gazebo-like structure with a domed roof, and a hole in the center of the dome. TRANSPORT PAD - WIDE A beam of light shoots down from above. There is a darker humanoid figure inside of it. A ring of orange light shoots up from the floor, its diamater slightly larger than the shaft of light; which removes the vertical beam of light. The humanoid figure is a translucent dark shape. Another ring of light, this one red, shoots up from the floor. The humanoid figure darkens, and becomes more opaque. A third, green ring of light shoots up from the floor, and the white suited shape of Alan can be seen. A final blue ring shoots up from the floor, around Alan, and it energizes his circuits. (Total time: 3 seconds) ALAN'S FACE - CLOSE SHOT Alan is looking down at his arms; seeing the glow of elecricity flowing through his arms for the first time, like Flynn did in the first movie. He is amazed by this new life. ALAN'S ARMS - CLOSE SHOT His arms are glowing, and the blue light eminating from the circuit traces are flowing. EXT. TRANSPORT PAD The transport pad that Alan and, previously, Flynn materialized on is a gazebo looking structure. There are pathways outlined in the floor with pulsating, glowing lines of energy. There is also a river of energy flowing next to the slight hill that the gazebo is resting on. The gazebo itself is white, slightly translucent and hazy. It is outlined in many vibrant colors on the edges. It is about 15 feet in diameter. There is also video screen showing two rotating human forms, as green wireframes, along with the text: MOLECULAR DIGITIZATION CONSOLE IMAGE 1 (flynn1): 100% TRANSFER COMPLETED. STABILITY: 100% IMAGE 2 (alan1): 100% TRANSFER COMPLETED. STABILITY: 100% 2 HUMAN IMAGES DIGITIZED MEMORY BANK FULL. Next to the video screen are an array of backlit buttons. Alan looks confused. ALAN That was intense. Alan looks around, and sees Flynn. ALAN Flynn? Is that you? Where am... TRANSPORT PAD - OVER ALAN'S SHOULDER From this angle you can see Flynn at the other end of the pad with a huge computer generated bird hovering over his left shoulder. The huge bird is HAWK. ALAN (screaming) Aagh! Flynn!! Watch out behind you!!! Flynn casually looks over his shoulder, sees the bird, and feigns a jump, like he was surprised that the bird was there. FLYNN Calm down, Alan. This is just Hawk. He's a program I created to help me find stuff in the computer world. He won't hurt you. He can't. Say hi to Alan, Hawk. HAWK - CLOSE SHOT Hawk is a computer generated hawk. He looks like a real hawk with feathers and all, but his eyes glow red slightly and his talons glow orange slightly. He is wearing a small backpack which has a tubular device attached to it. Hawk always talks a bit rapidly, and sounds similar to a parrot. Hawk is brown, with orange glowing edging. HAWK (talking rapidly) Greetings, Alan. Nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you from my good buddy Flynn here. He said that... FLYNN (casually) Alright, Hawk...that's enough... HAWK Acknowledge, Flynn. Flynn pauses, sighs, then regains his train of thought. FLYNN Alan Bradley, welcome to the world inside the ENCOM MX 16-923 supercomputer. Sit back and relax; enjoy the show! (beat) Do you remember what's going on? ALAN It's a little hazy, but I think I do. FLYNN Good. I found that the three methods to regain your memory after transport are "A" time, "B" have a program like Hawk here remind you what's going on and, thirdly, lots of adrenaline... well, you don't really have adrenaline in here... It'd just be a small power surge; that's what you're feeling. (beat) You feel okay? Alan pauses for a second to think about the question. ALAN Yeah. I feel great. Is Hawk wearing a backpack? FLYNN What? Oh. Yeah. Watch this. HAWK & FLYNN - CLOSE SHOT FLYNN Hawk? HAWK Yes Flynn? FLYNN Find me the name of the third file on data drive 4. HAWK Yessir! HAWK, MOVING UPWARDS Hawk flies up about 50 feet, he rotates a little, then a beam shoots out of his backpack. It pulsates a little, and Hawk remains motionless for a few seconds until the beam dissipates. TRANSPORT PAD - WIDE Hawk comes back down and sits on Flynn's shoulder. HAWK Readme dot now. FLYNN Go figure. I wrote this little guy to help Reese and myself find out information from the system. He's got a custom I/O algorithm which is mostly experimental. Reese got the idea to make it into a hawk looking bird. Great idea, really... Man, I miss her.... Anyway... We should start looking for MCR/2. Alan is looking around, absorbing the scenery. ALAN Where should we start? FLYNN I'll ask Hawk for ideas... FLYNN & HAWK - CLOSE SHOT FLYNN Hawk, have you seen a rogue program, who calls himself MCR/2 anywhere? Or perhaps some odd behavior by programs in the system? HAWK There are some malfunctioning programs in Sector 3-B. Perhaps that's where he is or was. FLYNN Thanks, Hawk. ALAN - WIDE Alan is a little confused, and amazed simultaneously. ALAN Can he find Tron for us? The more eyes we have on our side, the better... TRANSPORT PAD - WIDE FLYNN Hawk, can you find Tron, and retrieve two light buggy control rods for me? HAWK Yes, sir! Acknowledge! Hawk flies upwards about 20 feet, then shoots off into the distance, faster than is possible for a real bird. He leaves trails of light behind him, which quickly dissapate. Alan is still looking around, and at himself, not really completely understanding what's happened. Flynn looks around a bit, to try to figure out which way to go. FLYNN Well, we might as well head out... This way... Flynn walks down a pathway towards a skylined area. Alan follows him. They walk off into the distance. ALAN This really is beautiful. FLYNN You'll get used to it after a while. EXT. MESA - WIDE SHOT, MOVING IN The mesa is about 15 feet wide, irregularly shaped, but flat topped. The entire syetem is stretched out in front of it. Many structures can be seen, many beams of light. Some of the clouds encircling the computer landscape are below the mesa, but most are above. There is a figure silouhetted atop the mesa. It is TRON. He looks identical to Alan, although the patterns on his body are more elaborate than Alan's, and he's a slightly different shade of blue, almost white. He also has no facial hair. He looks stern, and concerned. He is looking down on the system, and all that is happening. He scans back and forth across the sky, looking for something, but not finding it. He suddenly stops, and turns around quickly, to see Hawk flying towards him. Hawk soon approaches and hovers a few feet in front of Tron. Hawk is a little out of breath. TRON Greetings, fellow program! It's been thousands of megacycles since I've seen you. Calculated any irrational equations recently? HAWK Greetings, Tron. I need your help. Flynn needs your help. Tron looks surprised. He takes a half-step backwards. TRON Is he in the system? Where is he? HAWK He and Alan are somewhere between the transport pad and sector 3-B. Tron suddenly looks very concerned. TRON I'll find them. Dissolve to: VALLEY Camera starts at a very high vantage point, and slowly swoops down to Alan and Flynn, who walk in from a side hallway. Flynn looks a little confused. He's looking around a lot. FLYNN It's been so long since I've been here. I wish I could remember which way to go. Alan looks around a little, and sees a crevace into another adjoining room. ALAN What if we ask those programs where we are, and how to get to Sector 3-B. Alan starts to run to the crevace. As he makes it there, Flynn has a look of "He'll learn for himself" on his face. FLYNN (quietly) That's not going to work, Alan. LARGE ROOM - WIDE SHOT Alan comes in through a crack in the side wall. There are many programs in here, in pairs. They are standing face-to-face, a few feet apart, talking back and forth. There is a slight haze of gray energy flowing from one's mouth to the other's ears, and vice-versa. Alan walks over to one pair of programs, from behind one of them. Alan politely taps one on the shoulder. ALAN Excuse me? The two programs don't flinch, or even acknowledge that he is standing behind them. Alan taps harder on the program's shoulder. ALAN (louder) Excuse me? No response. He walks over to another group, this time he pushes his way in so that he is standing between them. ALAN Hi. Me and my friend, are trying to find our way to Sector... They ignore him. Flynn approaches as Alan, now very annoyed starts yelling at the two programs. Flynn is very calm, and knows the situation well. ALAN (yelling) Hello?! Can you hear me? FLYNN They won't hear you unless they were programmed to. And you can't do that unless you're trying to change their program. I don't recommend it. The users will get annoyed that their programs aren't responding their programming. ALAN I was staring to wonder if I existed anymore. I guess that make sence. Alan looks relieved, and has a look of understanding on his face. FLYNN Come on, let's get out of this chamber, so Hawk can find us more easily if he needs to. They make their way back to the crack in the wall. FLYNN I'm starting to remember the way now... HAWK - CLOSE SHOT Hawk is flying through the air with ease. The ground races past him. His head darts around, looking for something. He slows down, eyes locked on a fixed position on the ground. HAWK Aha! The old game storage area! These game programs won't miss their game equipment. Hawk starts his way down. GAME STORAGE AREA - WIDE SHOT Hawk comes down, from his circling position in the sky, and lands on the ground. He starts walking around, looking at the equipment lined up around him. He starts talking like a tour guide. HAWK The games storage area. (pause) Equipment and games in storage since the video game crash billions of megacycles ago... There are piles of control rods strewn about amongst jai-alai equipment, small glowing balls, some mallets, and a light cycle, on its side, missing a wheel. Hawk walks over to the first pile of control rods, these slightly glow orange. HAWK Hmm. Light cycle rods. Deactivated August 1985. Hawk walks past them to the light cycle on its side. HAWK Broken light cycle. Most unfortunate. (to himself) Most unfortunate indeed. Hawk continues walking along, over to the next pile of control rods. These glow a deep purple. HAWK Matrix Blaster damage bars. Deactivated June 1986. Nope. Nope. Nope... Hawk continues walking along, over to the next pile of equipment. These are assorted hockey, and soccer equipment, with the occasional crossbow, each glowing different colors. HAWK Vice squad? Not even close. Next in line are some control rods, some glowing green, and some glowing blue. HAWK Aha! The mother lode. Light buggy control rods! He walks over, and grabs two of them in his talons. He grabs one green and one blue one. He then effortlessly flies up and out of this area, hardly flapping. ALAN AND FLYNN - NEAR FIREWALL Alan and Flynn walk into an area that looks identical to others we've seen, from this angle. Alan looks impressed. ALAN What is that? It's beautiful! FLYNN That? That's our firewall. Camera pans over to see a wall of glowing energy going from the floor up to infinity, and infinitely off to the left and right. It glows in ripples of reds, oranges, and yellows, in gorgeous plasma and fractal patterns. Alan starts to reach out to touch it. FLYNN You don't want to do that. Alan turns slightly to respond to Flynn. ALAN What? ALAN'S TORSO & ARM - CLOSE SHOT Alan pivots around just right so that his extended arm touches the firewall, and he is propelled backwards into a curving wall. FLYNN'S LEGS - CLOSE SHOT Alan slides down it to the floor at Flynn's feet. Flynn reaches a hand down to Alan and offers it to help him stand. FLYNN (concerned, but calm) You probably shouldn't have done that. Are you okay? Alan stands back up. Camera follows him. He stretches out and sighs some pain a little. ALAN What the? FLYNN It's our firewall. The wall of protection from other systems. You're lucky you got off that easy. If you try to force your way into it, like by punching it, it would have de-rezzed you... You should be more careful. COMMUNICATIONS ROOM This room looks similar to the previous communications room, but the colors are a little different, and the layout of the room is different. There are many pairs of programs here talking with eachother. The walls are smooth, and curve up to the ceiling. The walls and ceiling are curved, and glowing brightly. MCR/2 walks into the room. The entrance he comes in through has a circular opening. He trips over the curved bottom of it. He looks down at where he tripped, gets furious, and punches the wall. A crack of lightning shoots out of his hand, and up the wall. The archways of the room crystalize and shatter away to reveal hard angles, and boxy shapes. The glowing colors of the walls dim. The rubble and debris on the ground becomes a dim gray. MCR/2 stops for a second, and looks at what he's just done. MCR/2 - CLOSE SHOT He looks down at his fist, and smirks again. He looks around a bit, and quietly, to himself, says: MCR/2 Who says programs can't be the programmers!? SAME ROOM - TWO PROGRAMS - CLOSE SHOT Two programs are talking to eachother. There is a very slight haze from one's mouth to the other's. They are talking back and forth, almost talking over eachother. They are talking quickly. The program speaking has slighly brighter circuitry. MCR/2 can be seen behind them, in the distance. PROGRAM 1 Three. Four. Alpha. Two. Niner. Bravo. Over three. Ack? PROGRAM 2 Ack. November. Charlie. Two. Hotel. Point. Six. Seven. Ack? PROGRAM 1 Nack. PROGRAM 2 Ack. November. Charlie. Two. Hotel. Point. Six. Seven. Ack? PROGRAM 1 Ack. One. Three.... They continue this for a while. PROGRAM 2 - CLOSE SHOT PROGRAM is looking to the side. MCR/2's hand reaches in from behind them. The hand makes a fist, then struggles to flatten it back out. It slowly inches over to a shoulder of the program. The hand eventually touches the shoulder of the program. The colors of the hand flow into the program, and mix. The program looses touch with the other program. The hand stays there for a few seconds, then quickly pulls back. PROGRAM 2 - WIDE SHOT Program 2 loses track of the conversation with the other program. He looks down at the colors of light on him, and watches the change try to happen. He looks confused. The result is an odd pattern of the two colors. The colors fight it out. The new color struggles, but to no avail. The original colors take over again. MCR/2 - WIDE SHOT MCR looks contemplative for a second, then looks at his fist, and raises it in front of his face, and slowly starts to grin evilly, a smirk growing on his face. COMMUNICATION ROOM - FAR SHOT MCR/2 walks away from PROGRAM 1, who repeats: PROGRAM 1 Ack? And PROGRAM 2, who is now silently walking away. DATA CORRIDOR - WIDE SHOT This is a wide, deep, expansive hallway. There is a lower area, and an upper area. The lower area is the width of the corridor. The upper area is only 10 feet wide on either side of the corridor. There are the occasional bridges across the corridor. (This hallway is similar to the one where the lightcycles were chased by the tanks in _Tron_.) There is a lot of debris behind Alan and Flynn, and about 30 feet of debris in front of them. Alan and Flynn are on one side of the corridor, walking into shot. Zoom in slowly to them. The camera pans around them slowly as well. ALAN Shouldn't we be there soon? FLYNN It's on the other side of the memory matrix. We've still got a lot of distance to cover. ALAN What time is it anyway? Flynn, taken off guard by the question, looks at his wrist. FLYNN'S WRIST - CLOSE SHOT The wrist shows that there obviously isn't a watch there. FLYNN Flynn then pauses, and realizes he has no watch on. FLYNN Real time, or computer time? ALAN What's the difference? FLYNN Time is different in here. One day in here can be a few seconds in the real world. ALAN Nevermind... Alan and Flynn clear the debris, and Alan looks upwards. There is an odd flapping sound coming from above. ALAN Do you hear that? Flynn tries to listen around him. FLYNN Yeah... Sounds like Hawk is returning. HAWK - CLOSE SHOT Hawk flies over the landscape. There are many crevaces below him. There are many curved and oddly shaped glowing structures, and there is a dimmer area off in the distance. Hawk is still carrying the Light Buggy control rods. He is looking around, intently. FLYNN - CLOSE SHOT Flynn is looking upwards, trying to find something. He then discovers it, and points. He lets out a chuckle. FLYNN Ah! There he is. ALAN Hmm? Flynn opens his hands up, places them next to eachother, and offers the air he's holding to Hawk. Hawk swoops down, and hovers, flapping slowly in front of Flynn, and drops the control two rods into Flynn's hands. HAWK This what yer lookin' for? FLYNN Yep. Thanks, Hawk! (beat) Hawk, could you fly around and look specifically for the rogue program, MCR/2 for us? Find out which direction he's going so we can beat him there. HAWK You got it! I'll send all data acquired to program number 42, access code SJL-1545. (pause) By the way, Tron should be on his way. FLYNN Sounds cool here, little bird. Thanks. Hawk zooms back upwards, and hovers. Once again, a beam shoots out of his backpack for a second. The beam stops, and he then flies off into the distance. ALAN AND FLYNN Flynn hands the green control rod to Alan. ALAN I knew I should have put a better search algorithm into Tron. He'd be here by now... FLYNN Tron should meet up with us soon. We should run into him with these... You're gonna love this... Flynn holds the rod with both hands, pinkies together, palms upwards. FLYNN Okay, hold the rod like this, and then squat down. ALAN - CLOSE SHOT Alan holds the rod as Flynn had, then squats down. As he does, a 3-wheeler / A.T.V. like vehicle unfolds from the ends of the control rod and envelops him. This is a light buggy. The buggy hovers a few feet above the ground. There are no wheels underneath it. The distance from the bottom of the buggy to the ground beneath it directly corollates with the intensity of the light eminating beneath it. It gets brighter as it propells itself further from the ground. The buggy bobs slowly above the ground. You can clearly see their faces in the buggy, and the buggy is obviously computer generated. There are pieces of the buggy not physically connected to eachother. Flynn squats down, and his buggy appears around him. The vehicles are the same color as the glow emitted from the control rods. (Alan's is green, and Flynn's is blue.) FLYNN These are a blast... It controls just like your A.T.V. ALAN Okay... Flynn moves ahead, and waits for Alan to catch up. Alan has a little trouble with the steering and clutch at first, causing it to sharply dip the nose a few times as it attempts to move forwards, and the height is not consistant. Soon, he follows right behind Flynn. They zoom off into the distance. COMMUNICATIONS ROOM - WIDE SHOT Same room as before. The walls are blocky, and outlined with dim, muted colors. There are a lot of programs in the hall, as before, but about half of them are walking around aimlessly. The other half are still communicating with eachother, oblivious to what's happening around them. MCR/2 - CLOSE SHOT MCR/2 looks around, his eyes quickly shifting around. He's looking through his eyebrows. TWO PROGRAMS Two more programs are talking to eachother, the same way the previous two programs were. These are saying different things than the others. MCR/2 walks over to them, places a hand on one of their shoulders, as before, and he leaves it there longer than before. The program stops speaking, and he hesitates. The colors of his energy fight with the new colors flowing in through his shoulder. They blend to make an odd combonation of the two. Then he gets a glazed look in his eyes, the color goes almost back to normal, and he starts to wander off. MCR/2 then reaches to the other program's shoulder. This time, the color of his energy shoots through with a lot of force. A burst of light energy shoots out of the program, and into the floor. It quickly dissipates. The program now contains MCR/2's color. He looks around, confused. He then notices MCR/2 standing behind him. PROGRAM 4 M.C.R. 2. Request? MCR/2 - WIDE SHOT He opens his palms, holds his hands about a foot from his sides, and slowly rotates around, looking at the modified programs around him. He laughs meniacally. MCR/2 Who's the programmer and who's the program now? ALAN AND FLYNN Alan and Flynn are cruising through the landscape in their light buggies. They cruise over the landscape quite fast. As they're going, the landscape gets more bleaker, dimmer, colors are muted to the point where they are dim shades of gray. The architecture goes from being smooth and flowing to blocky and angular. Occasionally, they pass by overpasses, which are deteriorating, and collapsing. SECTOR 3-B - WIDE SHOT They cruise into to another of these dim, blocky areas, and stop. FLYNN Here we are... Sector 3-B. ALAN Looks like that program was busy. They turn off the light buggies, and the buggy re-folds itself from around them, and ends up back in the control rod. ALAN Alan looks down at the control rod, surprised and confused. He turns around to see Flynn looking around at the area, and placing his control rod in a vertical pocket on the side of his pants without looking. Alan looks at his pants, sees the pocket, and slides the control rod into it. Alan looks around at the area. It is devistated. There is rubble all over the place. FLYNN Flynn looks a little distrought, and saddened. FLYNN I wish you could've seen this place before M.C.R./2 destroyed it... It was beautiful. This was one of Reese's masterpieces... And now, it's... ALAN (flatly) Rubble. FLYNN In bits and pieces... HALLWAY As with other rooms in the computer world, the space is expansive, colorful, and curving. MCR/2 walks into the room and pauses. He looks around, smirks, and then punches the wall. He doesn't seem to get any pain from it. Shockwaves of light eminate from the spot where he punched. As those shockwaves hit the curves of the ceiling and other detailed areas of the room, the curves, and the detail shatter off, leaving only dimly-lit blocky remnants of what once was there. MCR/2 laughs. FIREWALL AREA There are programs walking around. The wall itself is rippling with bright hues of red, orange, and yellow, as before. As with other rooms, the space is curved, and similar to the previous room, except for the firewall on the wall closest to the doorway. There are many exits from the room going off into many different directions. As before, MCR/2 looks around, notices the wall, then punches it. When he does so, the light from where he hits ripples out, in concentric circles, slows to a stop, then quickly, fiercely, and brigher, goes back to where his fist hit, and knocks him back into the wall. He sits up, shakes his head, then re-approaches the wall. He looks at it, very pissed off. He then punches it with more power. The energy eminating from his fist is much brighter, and moves quicker. A crack forms in the firewall, and no other damage is visible around him. The remaining walls and beauty of the room are not changed. He watches the crack go up the wall, and happens to notice something in the sky. He notices Hawk spying down on him. As he's looking up, he notices Hawk link to the I/O tower with the link beam, as he's done before. MCR/2 looks back down, and looks around at the room he's in. He takes the exit going to the direction of the I/O link beam. He sees a silhouette in the doorway to that hallway. It's the outline of Tron. His arms are crossed, legs apart a little. TRON Hey! What do you think you're doing!? MCR/2 looks startled. He looks at the shadow, confused. MCR/2 Program? Identify yourself! Tron walks out of the shadows. He looks stern, and strong. TRON The name's Tron. State your business here, program. MCR/2 (meekly, sarchasticly) Me? Oh. I'm just a lost program, looking for my user. TRON (concerned) Well, come over here, and we'll try to get you back in contact with them. MCR/2 approaches Tron, with a smirk on his face. TRON Who's your user? MCR/2 reaches out an arm, and touches Tron on his shoulder. MCR/2 Oh, I think you know who my user is very, very well... (beat) Say "hello" to your user when you see him, but first, say "hello" to oblivion. Shockwaves of energy shoot out from his hand. Tron appears to be in a lot of pain. He struggles a lot, and eventually collapses. There is an odd SOUND, similar to a de-rezzing. MCR/2 walks over Tron's body, which is off camera. He walks down the corridor. Dissolve to: DATA CORRIDOR - WIDE SHOT The area that they are in is similar to the previous corridor. It is a different corridor than before. This one looks as though it's seen better days. There are cracks in the walls, debris on the ground, and programs walking aimlessly. Alan and Flynn are cruising through the bottom area of the corridor. FLYNN'S BUGGY - SIDE SHOT Flynn is looking forward, and occasionally to the side. A reflection moves up the side of his buggy. It is the reflection of BIT. Flynn scans around, and sees Bit out the side of the buggy. Bit is a multi-polygonal sphere, whose points are moving inwards and outwards, pulsating slowly. FLYNN Let's stop here. Alan and Flynn slow to a stop, with Bit alongside them. When they come to a complete stop, their buggys fold back up into the control rods. Alan looks around, contented. Alan and Flynn take their control rods, and put them into their pockets in their pants. ALAN Wow. Now I understand why you spent so much time in here. (pause) Why did we stop here? Alan looks around, and notices Bit. ALAN That's neat. I've never seen one of _those_ before. Is it here to tell us something? BIT Yes. FLYNN Alan, this is Bit. Think of him as an eternal "20 questions" game. BIT Yes. ALAN Is he really just a bit? BIT No. FLYNN (to Alan) He's actually a modified executive decision maker program. (to Bit) Did you get word back from Hawk? BIT Yes. ALAN (jokingly) Is Farmer Joe trapped down a well, Lassie? BIT No. FLYNN (to Alan, seriously) Hey, wouldja quit it? This is important. ALAN Okay, okay. Sorry. FLYNN (to Bit) Has Hawk seen MCR/2? BIT Yes. FLYNN (to himself) Let's see.. where could he be going? Hmm. (to Bit) Is he in Sector 9-E? BIT No. ALAN This thing makes you think doesn't he? FLYNN (quickly, to Alan) Yeah, now, um.... (to Bit) Is he in sector 5-A? BIT Yes yes yes yes! FLYNN A-ha! Is he near the power grid or the firewall? Bit just stammers there for a second, not sure what to do. Alan removes the buggy control rod from his pocket, and holds it in his hand. FLYNN Oh. Right. Sorry. Um, Is he near the firewall? BIT Yes! Flynn looks a little concerned. FLYNN Is he heading towards the I/O complex there? BIT Yes! FLYNN (to Bit) Thanks little program. Bit does is "YES" gesture, and zips off into the distance. FLYNN Well, he's heading towards the area that Hawk uses to communicate with us... (pause) Okay, well, no reason to get back in the buggies... Come this way.. Flynn gestures to Alan, who looks saddened. Flynn heads off through a doorway into another room. Alan puts his control rod into his pocket, and follows Flynn. BROWSER HALL This hall is very narrow, very long, and there is no visible ceiling. The firewall makes up one of the long, tall walls. On the wall across from the firewall are many many pictures, and blocks of text. In front of those are humanoid programs hovering in front of images and such. The programs have a glowing blur which goes through the firewall behind them. They slowly move down the images and text blocks they're in front of. Every so often, they move at high velocity over to another area of the wall. There are doors at either end of the hall. It is not wide enough for a light buggy to fit through. Alan and Flynn walk in through a doorway on one end of the far end of the long hall. FLYNN Hey, ever wonder what a web browser looks like from inside the computer? Alan is looking up at the thousands of images and things on the wall. ALAN This is? Wow. Alan stands for a minute, and stares up at the wall, awestruck. Flynn continues through the hallway. ALAN (jokingly) I can see my homepage from here! Flynn starts moving away from Alan. FLYNN Come on... This way! Alan looks over, sees Flynn moving away, then jogs to catch up to him. They both proceed throug the doorway on the other side. TANK STORAGE ROOM This is the same room as seen in the first movie. There are probably hundreds of tanks, in low resolution, lined up on opposing walls. The hallway is about a quarter mile or so long. There is doorway on the side, behind some tanks. Alan and Flynn walk in through that doorway. FLYNN Ready to drive a field generation tank? ALAN (disappointed) Why can't we just use the speedy light buggies again? FLYNN We need to go through a low energy area, which we can only do in the tanks... Come on! Flynn walks up to one, and as he touches it, the angularness of the tank becomes rounded. It goes from solid, flat gray to gradiated grays, rounding out the tank. The edges of the tank slowly build in hue and brightness from a dull gray to a bright green. As Flynn comes up to the back of the tank, the wedges making the top and bottom of the tank seperate, and open enough for him to walk in. He does have to duck his head down a little though. Alan, touches the side of the tank, and runs his fingers along its side. ALAN It has no surface. It's perfectly smooth. Flynn pokes his head up through a round circular port near the front of the tank, which pops open as he sticks his head out of it. FLYNN One-hundred percent pure surface. Yep. Do you want it to be textured? You can reprogram it if you want. These tanks are just little subroutines. ALAN So that's why these don't look like the people who programmed them. I'm starting to understand why you liked spending so much time in here. It really is amazing. Flynn smiles. Alan re-composes himself. ALAN Stranger and stranger... FLYNN Come on in, program! I need a good navigator! This means you! Flynn points at Alan. Alan walks towards the back of the tank, to the open doors, and proceeds to walk into the tank. As he walks in, the doors re-seal. Flynn, pulls his head back in. As he does, the door closes immediately. INT. TANK There is a center section with two seats. Alan is in one, and Flynn is in the other. This center section rotates independantly of the surrounding chamber. Everything has glowing lines of energy, which pulsate slightly. Alan is looking at a vidscreen with a video feed of the outside of the tank. There is a 3-D wireframe mesh overlayed over it. Flynn is looking at a vid screen with a wireframe of the area they were in. Flynn presses a few buttons, and the image on the vid screen starts to move. EXT. TANK The tank starts moving forward out of its parking space. It pulls out, and makes a left turn. It moves fairly slowly. INT. TANK There is no obvious acceleration/deceleration motion effect inside the tank. Alan is studying his monitor. Alan spots a corridor to the left on his video screen. ALAN Make this next left. Flynn looks over at Alan's screen, nods, and presses a few buttons. The tank turns down a side corridor. Alan's display shows an area with blocky features, and dim lights. FLYNN Looks like he's been here. IO CENTER There is a single central platform, with 8 platforms branching up and outwards from it with thin ramps. Each of those platforms has a stylized number glowing from the floor. There is an I/O GUARDIAN in the center platform. GUARDIAN Greetings program. How may I be of service? MCR/2 I wish to break into an I/O transmission. GUARDIAN I'm sorry. That feature is not permitted. MCR/2 I thought so. (beat) Oh well. Say goodnight, program. GUARDIAN Good... MCR/2 reaches out with one hand, lightly touches the Guardian on the shoulder. As he does this, shockwaves of orange energy eminate from his hand. As these pass through the Guardian, his colors change to a dim version of MCR's colors. GUARDIAN Greetings master. How may I be of service? MCR/2 Which communications port does the bird use? GUARDIAN Port 3, Subcarrier 5d. Use expansion carrier C to tap into the transmission. MCR/2 You are so helpful. MCR/2 walks up to the platform with the "3" glowing from it. He approaches the video screen on the platform, and pulls off a panel that has no visible means of doing so. MCR/2 sits down in front of this now open panel. He reaches in, amongst the glowing wires, and jabs his hand in there. Small sparks fly out from the panel as he does this. He then relaxes a little. HAWK Hawk looks around at the ground below him. He sees the IO center that MCR/2 just arrived at. HAWK Ooh. I better tell Flynn that the rogue has been here. Hawk flies upwards a few feet, aligns his backpack, and shoots out his communications beam. IO CENTER - PLATFORM 3 A beam of energy shoots into the platform. The video screen turns on, and some text and geometric patterns race across it. MCR/2 wakes up, startled. MCR/2 jabs his other fist into the mess of glowing wires. The beam of energy has a dim surge of light shooting out to Hawk. MCR/2 looks stressed. HAWK Hawk notices the surge of dim light coming towards him over his communications beam. HAWK Isn't that peculiar. When the surge hits Hawk, he instantly becomes motionless. His mouth slowly opens. He tries to say something, but all he can do is quietly mutter: HAWK Ach... chhchcchhh. Slow zoom into his left eye. Into: INT. HAWK - CUBE ROOM We are in a cube-shaped room with a desk and a single cyllindrical chair. The walls are a sold shade of gray. The lines where the walls intersect glow a little, as do the edges of the chairs and desk. MCR/2 is sitting in the chair, and Hawk is standing on the desk. MCR/2 is leaning forward in his chair, elbows on the table, fingers meshed together. Hawk is looking around, and he looks little confused. MCR/2 Hello there, little program... HAWK Who are you? What is this? What are you do.. MCR/2 reaches his had out towards Hawk, and points at him with two fingers. Hawk flashes MCR/2's colors, and then instantly goes silent. MCR/2 I think I should be the one asking the questions here. (beat) Hmmm... Where shall I begin? (beat) Oh, I know. Who are you working for? HAWK (defeated) flynn-1, sir. MCR/2 is a little confused and angered with the response, not quite expecting that answer. MCR/2 Is he not a user? HAWK Yes, sir. He is a user. MCR/2 And he is here; Here in _MY_ system? HAWK Yes, sir. MCR/2 Tell me, little program, just how does a pathetic user get transported into my system? HAWK Well, in the telluric realm, there is a particle light beam that eminates in the Laser Bay which digitizes the user, and their personality patterns arrive here in the etherial realm at the at the transport pad, while their physical molecular images are... MCR/2 Yes, yes, yes... Whatever. So, they use this method for entering into my system... (pause) Tell me, do they use the same method for going back to their telluric realm where they belong? HAWK Yes, sir. MCR/2 (to himself) I could use this to acquire other systems; to rule their world! (to hawk) And where is this transport pad of which you speak? HAWK Sector 4-R, Subsector 35. MCR/2 Thank you. Here. Have some reprogramming. My treat. MCR/2 reaches out, as before. Hawk shoots back across the room. MCR/2's glowing silouhette streaks backwards through the wall behind him. Quickly pull out through Hawk's eye to: EXT. HAWK He is noticibly shaken up. His feathers are ruffled, and slightly singed. He looks confused, and disoriented. He looks around for a few seconds. His communications beam is very dim. HAWK What the? Oh. Right. I must tell Flynn that the rogue may have been through here... The communications beam is almost nonexistant. Hawk rights himself, and then re-forms the communications beam, as bright as it was before. INT. FLYNN'S TANK Alan is staring at his console, then he wakes up from his staring stupor. ALAN (quietly) Lora? (shouting) Stop the tank! Stop the tank now! Flynn casually hits a few buttons, and the tank slows down to a full stop. ALAN (jumpy) How do I get out of here? FLYNN (to the tank walls) Tank, open. The back of the tank opens up as before, and Alan rushes out. Flynn sighs, then to himself, he says: FLYNN I knew this would happen sooner or later... EXT. TANK There are many programs walking around this area. They all glow brightly, but just stand around, looking around them. Alan is standing by a program, YEBO, trying to talk with her. She looks like Lora. After a second or so, he stops. Flynn walks over to Alan, who is a bit flustered. ALAN Flynn, how do I communicate with her? FLYNN Use the old S.N.L.P protocol. All of Encom's programs use a superset of it for basic communications. She's in idle state now, so you'll be able to. If she was busy, like those programs before, you wouldn't be able to get in a message at all... As you've already seen... ALAN (to Yebo) Greetings program. YEBO (flat) Greetings program. ALAN Request program name. YEBO Name Yebo. Program number 96-755. Request program name. ALAN Name Alan. User number 717. Yebo gets startled for a second, then goes back to her flat, emotionless stare. ALAN Request description. YEBO Program description: restore molecular structure and personality files from backup drives mounted at IO port 754. ALAN Request information about USER alan1. YEBO No information available. ALAN Goodbye. YEBO Goodbye. Alan shudders. Yebo starts to look around again, and slowly strolls around. ALAN Wow, that was odd. How often do you run into the programs of people you know? FLYNN Quite often actually. The real people flinch when you call out their names, but the programs just ignore ya. I used to come in here and change the appearance of the programs to avoid such confusion. That reminds me... we should have seen your little program, "Tron" by now... I wonder where he is... FLYNN Flynn looks around, and notices a hallway he didn't notice before. FLYNN Hey, what's this? Flynn runs over to it, and looks in. He sees something through the hallway that surprises him. FLYNN - FROM OTHER END OF HALLWAY Flynn slowly approaches through the short hallway. The camera pulls back to show a humanoid program standing, facing the hallway. From the color of energy, and patterns, you can see that it is MCR/2. Alan follows Flynn through the hallway. MCR/2 is standing in a stance similar to TRON's on the mesa earlier. MCR/2 Greetings, user. How do you wish to be de-rezzed? FLYNN Greetings program. Flynn fakes mishearing MCR/2, and jokes: FLYNN What was that? How do I wish you to be de-rezzed? In a ball of non-destructive energy, preferrably. ALAN There are two of us and one of you. How do you expect to win? MCR/2 smirks. MCR/2 Oh... Only if your tiny brain could know... You have no idea how much power I hold; how much you're dealing with here. (beat) Shall we play a game? If you win, I'll leave the system. If I win, you will leave _MY_ system. (beat) Choose your game. ALAN (jokingly) How about global thermonuc... FLYNN (flatly) Code Wars. MCR/2 Code Wars it is. One game! MCR/2 bows his head down, outstretches his arms, and in a flash of light, the room becomes: CODE WARS GAME ARENA The arena's playfield consists of two halves. They are seperated by a huge 30 ft. tall, by 40 ft. wide video screen, which is semi-transparent. Across each of the playfields are an array of game vehicles. There are 8 vehicles on each side. On each side, there are two small recognizers, two small light cycles, two light buggies, and two small polygonal translucent humanoid forms, all no taller than 3 ft. tall. The ones on Alan and Flynn's side have dimly glowing edges of green and blue. The ones on MCR/2's side have dimly glowing edges of yellow and red. Behind that platform are 10 ft. tall cyllinders, about 15 ft. in diameter. There is a small podium on each of these, with a small array of backlit buttons. On one side, MCR/2 is standing, and on the close side, Alan and Flynn are standing. ALAN AND FLYNN - WIDE SHOT Alan looks around him, as does Flynn. FEMALE VOICE Start programming game vehicles, and orient them on the playfield. FLYNN (to Alan) Well, let's get to work. Flynn picks up a mini light-buggy, and it starts to glow. He looks at it contemplatingly. He is re-programming it. The programmed pieces glow brightly. Dissolve to: ALAN AND MINI-RECOGNIZER Alan re-programs it, and places it on the playfield. Dissolve to: FLYNN AND MINI-TANK Flynn re-programs it, and places it on the playfield. Dissolve to: MCR/2 AND MINI-RECOGNIZER MCR/2 re-programs it, and places it on the playfield. Dissolve to: ALAN AND MINI-HUMANOID Alan re-programs it, and places it on the playfield. PLAYFIELD - WIDE SHOT All of the vehicles are now arranged on either side of the video screen. Alan and Flynn walk back to their podium, as does MCR/2. Flynn presses a button on his control panel, as does MCR/2. FEMALE VOICE Game unit programming complete. Game round commencing. The vid screen then dissipates into the air, and the two game grids raise into the air, mesh into one, then lower back down to the ground. ALAN AND FLYNN - CLOSE SHOT Alan looks amazed, Flynn smiles. PLAYFIELD The vehicles move one space at a time, some towards eachother, some away from eachother. It's like a wierd game of chess. After each movement, weapons fire. At multiple points, the vehicles approach eachother. When they are in firing range of eachother, violet circles form underneath them. When MCR/2's unit wins, the circle goes red. When Alan and Flynn's unit win, the circle goes green. When a unit wins, the other piece de-rezzes. A voice-over similar to the following is heard when a battle takes place: FEMALE VOICE Battle commencing between coordinates B-3 and G-3. Battle between units happens, one gets de-rezzed. FEMALE VOICE Battle complete. Winner is Green. Many units are lost on both sides. Eventually only two pieces are left; one green, and one blue. MCR/2 - WIDE SHOT MCR/2 walks onto the game arena, as does Flynn and Alan. They meet at the center of the playfield, which is now devoid of almost all vehicles. Alan and Flynn are very happy, and MCR/2 looks contented. MCR/2 Congratulations. You have beaten me. I will now thank you for wasting time here playing with this decoy, (points to himself) By now, I should have more power than you could possibly imagine... ALAN AND FLYNN - WIDE SHOT ALAN (unbelieving) You're just a decoy?!? MCR/2 - CLOSE SHOT MCR/2 If I were the real thing, do you think I would let you win that easily? (beat) Could do this? MCR/2 raises his hands, splayed out, and holds them with the thumbs touching his temples, (almost a mickey-mouse symbol) and he sticks out his tongue, to razz them. MCR/2 Thpppppt! MCR/2 de-rezzes himself, and out of where he was standing, Tron appears. He looks identical to Alan, although his light patterns on his body are much more elaborate. He looks exactly as he did before, glowing just as bright. He looks a little out of it. He collapses to the floor. TRON Where am I? What happened? FLYNN Apparently MCR/2 reprogrammed you to look and act just like him. Is there any of his programming left in you? Tron slowly stands up, with help from Flynn. TRON No, I don't think so. Last thing I remember was stopping this odd looking program who was over by the firewall, damaging the system. He cracked the firewall. He cracked the firewall!!! Flynn is engrossed in Tron's speech. He is surprised. ALAN (meekly) Tron? TRON (forceful, but polite) I am Tron. State your name, program. Alan's smile fills the room. ALAN I'm Alan. Alan-1. I wrote you! Tron breaks out a huge smile. He looks very excited. TRON (excitedly) Wow! It's an honor to finally meet you, interface to interface! Alan and Tron shake hands excitedly. Alan is giddy. Flynn takes a step back, and looks at the two of them, and slowly smirks. FLYNN Uncanny resemblance. TRON, ALAN AND FLYNN - WIDE SHOT FLYNN Well, we just wasted a lot of time, playing that stupid game. (yelling) Hawk!? Where are you!?! HAWK - OVER THE ARENA Hawk is flying through the air, his feathers are a bit scruffy. He is not quite glowing the same hue as before, as MCR/2's colors have blended with his a little. He looks around a little, and sees the Code Wars game arena. He sees whisps of energy shooting upwards. HAWK Ack! It looks like someone was de-rezzed! Flynn is yelling for me! Ack! I hope Alan is okay! Hawk swoops down to the platform that Alan and Flynn are standing on. CODE WARS ARENA - CONTROL PLATFORM Flynn looks at Hawk as he arrives. He has a look of concern on his face. HAWK Alan! Flynn! Holy smokes my friends, I'm so pleased you're not de-rezzed! FLYNN No, not yet... You look horrible! What happened to you? HAWK Nothing. I saw some damage that MCR/2 has done over by the Communica... er... Sector 5, Area 1. Alan looks surprised. ALAN Did he just lie to you? FLYNN (unbelieving) He can't lie to me. I'm his user. Not unless he was reprogrammed. TRON Try going into diagnostic mode, and find out if he was modified. My modification dates are all messed up now. FLYNN Good idea. Hawk, enable diagnostic mode. HAWK Diagnostic mode enabled. FLYNN Report file modification dates. HAWK Program created August 19, 1988. Last program revision three months ago. Latest program update four hundred cycles ago. TRON That's today... FLYNN Report internal log starting at the last known contact with me. HAWK 459820 cycles: flying over transformation matrix. Plus 10 cycles: found damaged sectors. Plus 5 cycles: linked up to communications center. Plus 1 cycles: communications link up with program MCR/2. Plus 2 cycles: communications link terminated. Plus 1 cycles: re-established communi... TRON Hawk, stop. Summarize communications link with MCR/2. HAWK Link conversation was about human transport into and out of the system. ALAN Were locations disclosed? HAWK Yes, sir. Program wanted to use the transport to exit the system. FLYNN Disable diagnostic mode. Flynn turns to Alan. ALAN (concerned) If he's going to the transport pad... FLYNN He might damage the transport program! ALAN We need to get to that transport pad before he does... If he tries to go through the mechanism, he could damage the program, or even worse, he could damage our image files and then we'd be stuck in here... (beat) I don't even want to think of that possibility. Flynn pauses, thinks to himself, then quickly says: FLYNN Chances are, he's on foot. We might beat him back there. Back to the tank. TRON I might be able to help you out here... Alan, come here... Alan walks over to Tron. Tron is holding a conversation with Alan as they're walking. They are out of earshot. The most that can be heard is mumbling between them. Alan, Flynn, Tron and Hawk walk back through the hallway to the tanks. HALLWAY FLYNN Hawk, can you lead us back to the transport pad using the quickest path possible. HAWK Yes, sir. Follow me! EXT. TANK The area around the tank still has programs walking around a little. Yebo is still there. As Alan and Tron walk past, she smiles. Flynn gets into the tank. Alan and Tron arrive a few seconds later. TRON Well, I have to go fix that firewall. Then I have to check security clearances for programs from the ZZ9-PZA systems. ALAN So, you won't be joining us? What if I need your help? TRON You know everything you need to know. Just do like I said, and you'll be fine. ALAN Well, it was nice meeting you in person, Tron. TRON Likewise. Don't be a stranger! See you on the t-t-y! Tron walks away, Alan watches him walk away. ALAN (to himself) That was odd. Alan goes up the small ramp into the tank. INT. TANK They resume their postions as before. Flynn presses a few buttons. ALAN Flynn, you handle navigation for a few minutes, Tron told me how to hack into the tank's routine. FLYNN _There_ ya go!! Hack away! ALAN Okay... I'll try. Alan puts both hands flatly on the console. All of the buttons there fade out of existance, and the panel starts glowing intensely. Flynn presses a few buttons on his console, and starts to move the tank, following Hawk. EXT. TANK The tank follows about 20 ft. behind Hawk, who is flying about 15 ft. off the surface of the ground. The tank is moving at a fairly slow speed. They round a few turns, and go down a few corridors. INT. TANK - ALAN Alan removes his hands from the console. It stops glowing. ALAN Okay... Try this. FLYNN Flynn presses a button which fades into existance on his console. FLYNN What's this? ALAN Press it! Flynn proceeds to press the button. Nothing happens. ALAN Um. Wait a second. Flynn giggles to himself. Alan puts both hands back flatly on the console. All of the buttons there fade out of existance, and the panel starts glowing intensly again. He soon afterwards removes his hands from the panel. It stops glowing again. ALAN Okay, try it again. Flynn presses the button again. EXT. TANK The tank rockets off into the distance, leaving streaks of green energy which dissipate into the air. TRANSPORT PAD The transport gazebo is powered down. The vid screen is blank. MCR/2 approaches the transport gazebo. He stands outside of it, and extends one hand out, places it on a support, and leans on it. Faint shockwaves eminate from that point, and when they reach the video screen, it powers up, showing two rotating humanoid figures in a green wireframe. Next to the screen are an array of buttons. MCR/2 A-ha! There's the control panel. MCR/2 walks over to the control panel, and gently runs his fingers down the panel. CONTROL PANEL - CLOSE SHOT The control panel has the two rotating green wireframes of Alan and Flynn on it. Underneath the wireframes are the text chunks: STABILITY: 100% MCR/2 reaches over, and presses a button off to the side of the display. Text on the screen scrolls on: CHOOSE REGENERATION SUBJECT MCR/2 touches the image of Flynn rotating on the screen. Flynn's wireframe changes. It's arms stretch upwards. Text on the screen scrolls on: THANK YOU. STEP ONTO THE PAD. REAL WORLD - LASER BAY Lora is sitting in front of the control panel for the transport. There is a clock behind her reading 2:50am. She is completely by herself, very bored. She looks down at her watch, sighs, then stands up, and grabs her keys. LORA This is crazy. I need food. She walks up the stairs out of the lab, and goes through a door, mumbling: LORA "Stay here", "We'll be right back". Right. Why couldn't they put a snack machine in the lab. It's not too much to ask for. I hope the meat will still be good for dinner tomorrow night... After the door closes, an indiacator light on the control panel lights up. TRANSPORT PAD - WIDE A beam of light shoots down through the center of the gazebo. It looks the same as the beam that Alan and Flynn used to get into the system. MCR/2 walks over into the beam, and stands there, arms stretched upwards, like the image on the video console. He starts to stretch out, upwards. His hands go higher and higher upwards, with his feet still on the ground. REAL WORLD - TRANSPORT AREA The machines are powering on by themselves. The displays on them are showing the transport programs running, and that they are receiving someone from the computer world. LASER SCANNER The end of the scanner starts glowing, and the beam emerges from the end. It starts to project out the image of a human form. Unlike the plant before, the laser continues to encase the materialized form, as it scans over it. The entire body forms. It is dark, translucent and featureless; as if the entire body was made out of smoked glass. VIDEO MONITOR The form can be seen on the monitor, in both its computer generated form and the live video form simultaneously. It is struggling and moving around. A green box beneath the display displays the text: MOLECULAR INTEGRITY %65 LASER INTENSITY %90 LASER SCANNER An arm of the featureless body reaches out to the nearby control panel, and moves a nearby lever upwards. The SOUND of an electronic ALARM is heard. The beam encompassing the figure glows brighter, and sparks of lightning shoot out all around it. VIDEO MONITOR A red flashing box appears at the bottom of the screen, with the text inside it: MOLECULAR INTEGRITY %70 LASER INTENSITY %100 MOLECULAR IMAGE UNSTABLE LASER SCANNER The figure struggles, and it starts to fade out underneath the glow of the laser. The figure fades out underneath the laser wireframe projected by the laser. Quickly after that, the wireframe fades out, leaving no remnants of the transfer. LASER LAB - WIDE SHOT The lab is still empty. The ALARM is still SOUNDING. Lora comes into the lab from the entrance way. She is holding a TWINKIE. She is startled by the alarm. She runs down to her console, leans over and types something. The alarm stops. She stands up straight, mezmerized by the words she sees on the screen. She drops the Twinkie. VIDEO DISPLAY A display can be seen reading: MOLECULAR IMAGE OF KEVIN FLYNN DAMAGED 83% COMPLETE 17% DELETED LORA (V.O.) This is not good. Dissolve to: COMPUTER WORLD - TRANSPORT GAZEBO The transport pad looks a little damaged, with very angular edges, and it has some glowing liquid on the ground. The liquid is smeared on the ground, and on one of the posts supporting the roof of the gazebo. Off in the distance behind the gazebo, the glowing cityscape can be seen; the colors dim and muted. The tank, led by Hawk arrives behind the gazebo. Alan and Flynn emerge from the back of it and walk over to the gazebo. Flynn goes over to the video terminal. Alan is looking at the ground and the support pillar, noticing the glowing liquid. ALAN What is this liquid? FLYNN I dunno... It's all over the place. It's even on the console. HAWK It looks like memory refresh fluid. Flynn types on the console. Alan looks around more. Flynn notices something on his display, and is shocked by what he reads. FLYNN Oh no. ALAN What's wrong? FLYNN Looks like our friend was here. You might be going home alone. Alan turns around and looks at Flynn, surprised. HALLWAY This is a hallway like many others seen earlier. There is nothing special or distinctive about it. The walls are curved and smooth. There is a trail of glowing fluid from one of the side hallways to where MCR/2 is. MCR/2 is walking around, staggering. He's dragging one of his feet behind him, leaking some fluid onto the ground. His glow is not as intense as it once was. He is visibly angry. He is muttering incoherently, but occasionally he repeats: MCR/2 Gotta find trnasfer program Yebo. She will know how to fix me. Gotta find trnasfer program Yebo. She will know how to fix me. He looks all around, confused as to which way to go. He eventually hesitates and starts to go down the side hallway with the glowing fluid down it. MCR/2 Gotta find trnasfer program Yebo. She will know how to fix me. He takes a look, and notices that this is the hallway he came down. MCR/2 Oh. Right. Just looking back. Nope. No programs of any use there. He looks around, and notices that no programs noticed him, then he jogs down another corridor, looking very paranoid. MCR/2 Gotta find trnasfer program Yebo. She will know how to fix me. TRANSPORT GAZEBO Flynn is typing on the console, with Alan looking over his shoulder. Alan looks concerned, and Flynn is angry and deep in thought. FLYNN It looks like MCR/2 has tried to go back the way we came in, and in the process he broke my mollecular image stored in the computer. HAWK Why not try to rebuild it using Alan's molecular image. FLYNN Good idea. Flynn looks around, thinking, then goes back to pounding on the keyboard. FLYNN This is going to take a while. ALAN Why don't I follow the trail of "memory refresh fluid" while you work on that. (pause) MCR/2's no doubt been damaged, It should be easy to de-rez him. Are you okay? FLYNN Yeah. Why don't you follow the trail? There's nothing you can do here... Go play a game or something... ALAN Yeah. Alan starts to jog away, following the glowing trail of fluid. GAME STAGING AREA There are a few sets of platforms, slightly raised from the floor, with patterns on the floor that continue onto the walls. There are windows next to each set of platforms, showing a game arena through them. The edges of everything are glowing brightly. There is some debris on the ground. MCR/2 is walking through the area nervously. He is shaking and leaving a trail of glowing fluid, which is glowing dimmer than the fluid at the transport gazebo. He is also glowing dimmer than he used to. Alan jogs in from the rear of the room and stops, looking at MCR/2. MCR/2 is standing at the opposite end of the room, shaking slightly, and looking very paranoid. He looks around, and eventually notices Alan standing in the room. MCR/2 Ah. I see you have found me. Your sort algorhythm must be better than I had thought! ALAN Well, I'm better than you are. Especially now. MCR/2 is visibly annoyed by Alan's response. MCR/2 I'm still just as powerful as I was before. Try battling me, and I'll crush you like the user scum that you are. ALAN Yeah... Whatever. Name your game! MCR/2 Oh. Let's see. There's so much I'm good at. How about Flying Discs? ALAN Aaah. One of the classics. (beat) To the death? MCR/2 nods. ALAN You're on, buddy-boy! They walk over to a set of two platforms in the room. FEMALE VOICE Request? MCR/2 Two to transport to the Flying Discs arena. FEMALE VOICE Confirmed. Beams of light shoot down through the floor around MCR/2 and Alan. The beams recess back into the ceiling, taking them up with it. INT. TRANSPORT GAZEBO Flynn removes his hands from the glowing console, and slowly walks over to the side of the gazebo. FLYNN Well, little friend, it looks like I'm stuck here for a while... A long while... HAWK Was the reconstruction not sucessful? FLYNN I can only get it 90% stable. I've been meaning to spend more time in here... I relate to these programs better than most users. I wasn't planning on spending the rest of my life in here though... Flynn's hopes are deflated. He moves to the other side of the gazebo, and sits cross-legged, and looks at the floor. He looks very depressed, and holds his head in his hands. INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA This is a wide open, expansive room. The ceiling is about 30 or so feet above eye level, and the floor is not visible; it just goes on forever. Across the arena, about 100 feet away, the window into the staging area is visible. Beams of light shoot down from the ceiling. Forms start to materialize inside the beams. The forms are circular flying saucer shaped. MCR/2 and Alan are sitting in them. Their beltline and above are out of the top of the saucer, and below is inside the saucer. A glowing disc hovers up from the floor. MCR/2 hovers over to it, and picks it up with his hands. MCR/2 Are you sure you want to do this? ALAN Am I sure!? Are YOU sure? MCR/2 Hrmpf! MCR/2 and Alan rotate about the center of the arena, facing eachother. MCR/2 throws the disc, like a frisbee, to Alan's right. He hovers over quickly, but he misses it. It flies past him, and hits the wall. The section of the wall that it hits absorbs the shock, and glows MCR/2's colors. MCR/2 I WILL de-rez you! INT. TRANSPORT GAZEBO Flynn quickly lifts his head. He stands up, happily muttering to himself. FLYNN It might work! Flynn puts his hands on the console. It starts to glow. He removes his hands from the console. The display quickly rolls from 90% to 95%. FLYNN (to himself) That might be enough! (shouting) Hawk! Come over here. Hawk arrives in front of Flynn. HAWK Request, sir? FLYNN I need you to contact user Lora1, and act as a medium so I can ask her something... HAWK Acknowleded, sir! Hawk flies out about five feet out, ten feet up. He spins around, and a beam shoots out of his backpack. INT. LASER BAY Lora is sitting in her swivel chair, reading an old copy of "Joystik Magazine". Her terminal BEEPS. A window labelled "Helper for Assistance With Knowledge" appears. Lora looks at the screen, and looks confused. LORA This event was not scheduled. Why does this particular program seem familiar? Text scrolls into it: HAWK Greetings user lora1. User flynn1 wishes to make a request. LORA Aah! How could I forget! Well, actually, I forgot because it's the middle of the morning... She types into the window: LORA Acknowledged. Hello Flynn! INT. TRANSPORT GAZEBO Flynn is happy that the connection has commenced. FLYNN Ask her to check my image file on the physical extruding machine. HAWK Acknowledged. The beam coming out of Hawk's backpack pulsates. INT. LASER BAY Lora is staring at her screen. Her face lights up. She types into her terminal: LORA Of course! I'm on it. She gets up, and walks over to the extrusion machine as seen earlier. She presses a few buttons on it. She sits back down at her terminal, clicks on a few icons, and types some text into a window. The machine starts kicking in. The laser is scanning on the surface of the orange gook. Something is emerging from the machine. Dissolve to: INT. GAZEBO Flynn is slowly pacing in the gazebo. Looking around, looking at his glowing patterns on his arms, and legs. Soon, the Hawk's beam starts pulsating. HAWK Flynn... She's back. FLYNN Yes? HAWK Um. It doesn't look good. If you were to try to beam back to your world... You wouldn't survive. Flynn drops his head down, and takes a deep breath, hopes deflated. HAWK Well, at least you can rebuild all that the the rogue has damaged. (beat) And you get to spend quality cycles with me! Flynn lifts his head up, and looks at Hawk through his eyebrows. HAWK What? What did I say?! Dissolve to: INT. LASER BAY Lora is sitting in her chair. A highly deformed humanoid figure made of an orange translucent material is behind her. It is missing parts of its body, and has extra arms. Dissolve to: INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA There are many regions of Alan's colors on the walls, and fewer of MCR/2's. There are 2 uncolored regions. They fly around, Alan has the disc. He throws it. MCR/2 slides over, and just barely misses it. ALAN The scores are tied. There is just one light region left. Are you ready to end this? MCR/2 Never been more ready! Say "hello" to oblivion for me! The disc floats up through the center of the arena, and hovers over to MCR/2. He grabs it. Quick series of cuts: INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA - ALAN He is smiling, with his eyes wide open. INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA - MCR/2 He is sweating, and still very paranoid. He throws the disc. INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA - ALAN He catches the disc and wings it back at MCR/2 immediately. INT. FLYING DISCS ARENA - MCR/2 The disc hits him square in the chest. It goes through him, and it strikes the unlit region of the wall behind him. He looks down at his sucking chest wound. There is a complete hole through his chest. MCR/2 Noooooo! MCR/2 de-rezzes in a sparkle of light. ALAN It's all in the reflexes. A beam of bright light shoots down from the ceiling, surrounding Alan. GAME STAGING AREA A beam of light shoots down from the ceiling, and Alan appears in the center of the beam. He looks around, confused a little. He smiles then runs off to the direction in which he came from before. INT. TRANSPORT GAZEBO Flynn is now standing at the side of the gazebo, pensively looking outwards. Alan approaches from behind Flynn. ALAN Well, he's no more. I deleted that sad excuse for an i-node. How did it go? Are you ready to go home now? FLYNN I'm afraid this is home for me now. ALAN What? What do you mean? You couldn't reconstruct the mollecular image? Flynn touches his nose with his forefinger. FLYNN Spot on. I was only to get it 80% stable. I could end up back in the real world without an arm, or a leg, or my head. (beat) Looks like i'm stuck here. Indefinitely. (beat) But you can go home whenever you want. I've got a lot of rebuilding to do in here.. ALAN Well, that's good... FLYNN You better come back in now and then and visit me. Just stand in the center. Alan shakes his hand, gives him a quick hug, then steps into the center of the gazebo. Flynn presses some illuminated buttons on the console, and a beam shoots down from the center of the gazebo. It replays in reverse the transport sequence. POV swings around to follow Alan through the beam. This starts the TRANSITION SEQUENCE The clouds rush past, with the city-like scenery fading off into the distance. Eventually, Alan arrives back in the INT. LASER BAY Alan arrives through the laser, as the plant did earlier. While he is still in the laser beam, he looks at his arms in front of him, to see what he looks like while he re-materializes. Once he completely materializes, he collapses into a heap on the floor. Lora runs over and comforts him. ALAN Flynn.. He didn't... He couldn't rebuild his... He.. LORA Yes, hon... I know... I know.. Dissolve to: INT. LASER BAY - CONTROL CONSOLE Off in the distance, Alan and Lora are holding eachother. Up close, a video monitor can be seen. The clock in the background shows that it is 6:45 am. Lora's terminal BEEPS again. A window pops up on the screen, labelled "HAWK". It starts scrolling text: HAWK Alan1, Lora1? Please respond. Lora and Alan look over to her screen. ALAN I think your console is talking to us. Lora walks over to here console, in the foreground. She looks at the screen. LORA Hawk? I think Flynn wants to talk with us. Alan walks over to the console and starts typing into the keyboard... ALAN (typing) Alan1 here. Request? HAWK Flynn suggested checking the backup programs, to see if any of them were scheduled to backup the mollecular image files. ALAN Lora, can you check the backup subsystem to see if it ran in the past few hours... LORA I'm on it... Lora rolls over to another console, and starts typing. LORA Those images were not scheduled for backups, but, hmm... this is odd. Backup group 3 is seven times larger than it should be. Lora stands up, and heads for the door. LORA That's gotta be it. I'll go load in the tapes... ALAN (typing) Lora is loading up the tapes. Is Flynn there? HAWK (on the console) I'll get him. (beat) Flynn here. I managed to rebuild a lot of the system, and I wrote programs to finish my work. It's amazing how much time has passed in here already. It feels like days since you left... ALAN (typing) Wow. It's only been about an hour here. A window pops up on Alan's screen. It reads: "Two-person chat". It displays two usernames: "Alan1" and "Lora1". LORA (in text window) The tapes are loaded, Alan. Check them for the files... Alan opens a window, labelled "Restore files". He starts clicking on icons, and eventually finds two files called "alan1_molecular.image" and "flynn1_molecular.image". The times on the files read 2:50 am. He double clicks on the "flynn_molecular.image" icon, and a status bar appears, showing progress. It states that it will take about 30 minutes to restore. Alan types into the "Hawk" window: ALAN Tell Flynn the restore is going. It'll be about a half-hour or so. Lora arrives back at the laser lab. ALAN Well, hopefully this is the right file, but who knows if this was before or after it got damaged. LORA Well, we have nothing to lose... Series of shots: Dissolve to: INT.
