Perspective on Service

Printable Version

Prior even to beginning my Master’s program at Syracuse University, I have used education as a mechanism through to replenish the resources of the communities I’ve lived in and from which I’ve received so much.  This has taken the form of tutoring deaf and hard of hearing students, running an English camp in South Korea as a fundraiser to provide relief for the victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami in 2004.

More recently, I have taken an active role in my department as co-Chair of our annual IST Conference for 2010 and then again in 2011. With my colleague Tiffany Roman in 2010 and Justin Whiting in 2011, I planned and coordinated this one-day event to provide our students with an opportunity to share their research with each other. I remain an active member of the Association for Educational Communications (AECT), having volunteered at the 2009 conference, reviewed proposals for the 2010 conference and served as a judge for the Immersive Learning Awards. Finally, with a background in open source software development, I have developed software tools to support teaching and scholarship.

Evidence of Progress

Departmental Service

Take on a leadership role in a departmental conference
Evidence 1, Evidence 2
I, along with my colleague Justin Whiting, co-Chaired the annual, student-led Instructional Systems Technology (IST) Conference for 2011. This conference provides IST students with a forum in which to present their work and the opportunity to see the work of others.
Evidence 3
I, along with my colleague Tiffany Roman, co-Chaired the annual, student-led Instructional Systems Technology (IST) Conference for 2010. This conference provides IST students with a forum in which to present their work and the opportunity to see the work of others.

University Service

Foster interdepartmental communication
Evidence 1
I took advantage of my position as co-Chair of the annual, student-led Instructional Systems Technology (IST) Conference in 2010 to actively solicit participation from departments with which IST has much in common.
Evidence 2
As co-Chair, I promoted interdepartmental awareness and communications by replacing the IST Conference 2010 Keynote with a Key Panel composed of representatives of four different departments.

National Service

Maintain an active membership in relevant organizations
Evidence 1, Evidence 2, Evidence 3
As an active member of AECT since 2009, I have reviewed conference proposals for the Design and Development (2009 and 2012) and Teacher Education (2012) divisions.
Evidence 4
As an active member of AECT since 2009, I have served as a judge for the 2010 and 2011 Immersive Learning Awards.
Author and support software tools for researchers and educators' use
Evidence 1
Reference Timeline web application which plots a collection of references on a timeline to visualize how they relate temporally. (Note: Mendeley is actively updating their beta API and therefore your mileage may vary.)
Evidence 2
Continuous Assessment web application to enable educators to collect and monitor regular peer assessment data to facilitate group work.
Evidence 3
Served as Mendeley Advisor from 2010 to present. Mendeley is a social reference management tool which I find valuable and have promoted amongst colleagues. As a social network-based tool, it is improved by the addition of users and it is for this reason I serve as a campus representative on a volunteer basis.
