All of the thumbnail images on this site were created using this java application. It allows you to crop sections from images with fixed proportions and output them at a fixed size. You can download the JAR file. All of the source code is included inside the JAR file, too.
This version cleans up the redraw ickiness that I created in the v1.1.2001.10.19 release.
Once you have the JAR file, you would run it like this:
java -jar thumb.jar image1 image2 image3 ...
You can give it as many files on the command line as you desire. There are two additional options you can specify.
