I'm starting to be pretty excited here about Apocolypse. Knight Hawk, did you finish your HOST? And what is it? Tyranids?

Anyway, now I have about 3500 points of Orks I think - enough for an Apocolyptic Battle. Really looking forward to this new set. Anyone else into this, too?

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, September 21, 2007 - 10:39 am:

So I'm off to check on the new White Dwarf today! I hear that it has a massive Warhammer 40K Apocolypse battle report in it. Hope it is out, hope it is out! Imagine it, 4000 points of Orks on the table. Imagine it if you will.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - 01:22 pm:

Looking forward to planning a massive-scale Apoc battle sometime in the coming months - excitement continues to build as the release date for this expansion approaches. Now that I have begun construction on three massive Ork Squiggoths (scratch-built, of course) and two Stompas, believe me - I will be ready to do this thing once appropriate repairs have been completed on the basement.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, September 28, 2007 - 10:10 am:

Sixth Mega-Armour Ork painted! Seven will probably be done this weekend, Eight will follow next week. The WAAGGHH builds in preparation for Apoc. I have a large force now (3500?) but I am becoming well aware that of those I play with, I do not have the most models, not by a long shot. Greg seems to have 5000 pts easy, Big D claims that he could soon have 3000, El Luko probably has 4000 if he fields both armies of his, and the Esteemed Uncle has probably an ungodly 5000 assembled/painted, another 1000 assembled, and another 10,000 in boxes ready to assemble.

My new goal is to keep building until 4000. A full unit of Mega-Armoured Orks will net me another 500 total, though some of these points are already included in my total. I want to finish up my Squiggoths, but these are only 60 or 80 points each, I forget which, so HUGE as they are, they are not big points. Did finish my 3rd Battlewagon lately, so that's probably 150 right there. Once I have my shelving back in place, I will be able to do a count and see how I am doing on Orks.

If I really wanted to push, I could use my Moria Goblins as extra Grots, but since I already have like 130 Grots, I probably don't need more, but I suppose 100 points is 100 points. These are only assembled, however, not painted - so if I wanted to REALLY have them ready, I'd have to knuckle down and do it.

So overall, I think I have added about 400 points to my force in the last six months. Not too much, really, but getting there, getting there me hearties.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, September 28, 2007 - 10:45 am:

Well, maybe almost - some of these still need painting after all (2 Mega Orks and the Squiggoths, plus 1 Buggy). So getting close. Also I'd love to get my Stompas assembled.

If the rumours are true and they decide to drop Orks from 9-10 points down to 6, well, I'll lose probably 400 points right there also, but that won't be a bad thing, will it?

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 10:27 pm:

Seventh Mega-Armoured Ork painted! One more needed to reach my goal of eight.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Monday, October 01, 2007 - 01:34 am:

I have a full company of Space Mariones. Yes, 100 infantry models plus support vehicles. Eric Also has 1 full company of Space Marines. He lives in Brockport now, and so could easily play warhammer with you on a weekly basis. I also have 3000 points worth of Witch Hunters (sisters of Battle) which can be fielded in various incarnations. I have 1 such army led by my Grand Inquisitor that is 2000 points worth of infiltrators and deep-strike (2 10-man space marine scout squads, 2 10-man space marine assault squads, 4 10-man IG stormtrooper squads, and my inquisitor lord with retinue in a transport). I field my HQ unit at deployment, let you set up, then put 80 models wherever I want to in the first turn of combat. BRING IT ON!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 01, 2007 - 09:19 am:

Eighth Mega-Armoured Ork finished! Next: Paint a 'Eavy Armoured Ork - this will finish the Warboss's bodyguard of 8 Mega-Armoured Orks and 2 'Eavy-Armoured Orks. Oh yeah!

Fred, that's a NICE army selection - sounds as if you must have at least 5000 pts total! Are your Space Marines Ultra? I am guessing yes since I remember a certain Rhino which was used to carry the Boys in Blue.

I would very much like to host an Apocolypse Event sometime soon - quite when, I can't say since the Basement is still undergoing repairs, but I will be able to begin re-working the Finished Side (tiles are coming up) of my basement next week prior to the release of this new expanion. At this point, the room is going to begin going back together again, starting with my Bookshelf full of Orks!

It'd be Pure Cool to get back together for a game sometime, Fred! Patience is required on my side, but I am slowly/surely reassembling things to the way they used to be - and then, of course, it shall be time to make up for lost time - party time!

PS - Will have to keep Eric in mind also for our next gaming session!

I am contemplating bringing an old tradition back to life... The semi-annual Halloween Hangout! That's right, you heard it here first! Thursday, Nov. 1st through Sunday, Nov. 4th (Yes, I actually am spending TWO vacation days on this event, Thursday AND Sunday). circle your calendars, come on down! Plenty of room for ALL at Casa de FRED! Bring Warhammer! Bring Magic! Bring PC games! Bring yourselves! Just PLEASE let me know if you are coming, so I can make appropriate arrangements. L8RS!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 02, 2007 - 09:32 am:

Sounds PRETTY AWESOME! Must do some calendar double-checking first - I have another party for Halloween, but when? Will get back 2 U soon - Fred, is your email addy the same as before? (the greyfox at excite, etc, as shown above?) Will drop you a note soon so the planning can commence!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 02, 2007 - 10:05 am:

Well Sol the Host is almost completely modeled out. It's a force of Necrons as follows

HQ
Necron Lord

Elites
5 Pariahs
5 Immortals
10 Flayed Ones

Troops
40 Warriors

Fast Attack
3 Destroyers
2 Wraiths
5 Scarab Swarms

Heavy Support
2 Tomb Spiders
1 Monolith

Alternate plan

HQ
1 Necron Lord

Troops
60 Warriors

Heavy Support
3 Monoliths

2nd Alternate and most likely to happen

HQ
1 Necron Lord

Troops
100 Warriors

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 02, 2007 - 10:59 am:

Hey Knight Hawk, how are you doing? Woah, I am learning recently how to play against Necrons and MAN are they tough! Those Gauss Weapons are deadly, I have to admit, and usually this is the biggest problem I face.

Woah! Three Monoliths! Sounds as if you will have the option of fielding these in an Apoc battle where, rumour has it, three Monoliths can create a field of force that improves the chances for Necrons of making their "We'll be Back!" roll by one. I hear that two Monoliths can create a screen which reduces the accuracy of enemy fire.

Plus WOW, 100 Necron Warriors? That's a worthy goal! I can't imagine how many points THAT would be... I mean, that'd be HUGE!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 02, 2007 - 11:37 am:

Actually 100 necrons and a fully kitted lord is only 2000 points :) I currently have 60 of the 100 bought and modeled so I'm close to that army list.

Yeah the Gauss weapons hurt but what gets GF is the We'll be back rule. Plus my lord always carries a resurection orb so I can use the rule even if they normally wouldn't be able to. Then the Tomb Spiders do that as well so I'm covered no matter what.

Oh and the Lord 's gear looks like this.

Staff of Light- Assault 2 weapon

Resurection Orb- Necrons can roll a we'll be back check even if the normally wouldn't be able to IE instant death effects.

Phylactery- on the lords we'll be back check he gets a certain amount of his hits back
1-3= stays dead as normal
4= 1 wound
5= 2 wounds
6= 3 wounds

Phase shifter- gives him a 4+ invulnerability save

Now tthe reason for the 3 Monoliths is that they have 14 armor all around and no weapons get the double penatration, and the partical whip which is a Str 9 AP 2 large blast template weapon. So unless you have an Inv save you get no armor save and are most likely dead.

The nice thing about the 100 warriors is you have to kill 75 of them to make me retreat.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 09:26 am:

Knight Hawk,

I saw a cool conversion in the new Apoc book for something called a "Super Monolith." This thing looked like a regular Monolith, but it was twice as tall! Also heard a passing reference to a Necron Pylon... but I am short on details, I am afraid. Anyone getting the new Apoc book on the 13th? Apocolypse is the expansion where you get to use ALL your models... even if these exist across two different armies! The game centers around claiming objectives and throws out the Force Organization Chart altogether. Players may or may not have a fully balanced game, but the point of Apoc is more for recreating great battles and the game REALLY shines when playing themed battles. Right on! Not sure how often I will ever play, but guaranteed I will be picking up the book. I mean, it will be worth it just to get the stats on the Ork Super-Heavy, the Stompa. (but no Gargant stats? Boo hoo)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 10:39 am:

Hmmm... Sounds like they designed this new expansion specifically for ME! cool.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 11:58 am:

Yes they did. Assuming you like Warhound Titans and Thunderhawk Gunships.

;)

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 02:03 pm:

Thunderhawk

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 03:11 pm:

I've seen that mod awhile ago in White Dwarf I think, or there was one at least. As for the Pylon theres one you can buy from Forge World but GW might be making their own now. I know GW has taken Forge World stuff and made it official before so who knows.

So lets see no FOC for my necrons

1 Necron Lord
3 Monoliths
30 pariahs
30 Immortals
9 Destroyers
9 Heavy Destroyers
9 Wraiths
50 Flayed Ones
100 Warriors
9 Tomb Spiders
20 Scarab Swarms

Yeah I think that'd work for striking fear MUHAHAHAHAHAHA

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 04, 2007 - 03:16 pm:

Oh hell make it 3 necron lords on destroyer bodies with resurection orbs.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Monday, October 08, 2007 - 12:24 am:

you suck.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 08, 2007 - 10:09 am:

Just played a game of 40K over the weekend. It was Orks (me) and Necrons (my uncle) teamed up against The Lost and the Damned (friend Greg) and the Blood Angel Space Marines (friend Mike).

There was also a central objective that could be claimed for additional victory points (we were playing Take and Hold, Gamma, with 1500 points per player).

I demolished my opponent (all but his general who avoided the Ork Choppas and went after the Necrons instead). He had nothing left. I lost one unit of Orks at the Objective who were overwhelmed by Imperial Guard on all sides, and I also lost an Ork Battlewagon that was shot to bits by a Blood Angels Predator.

However, the Pink Orks and the Blue Orks turned the tables by chopping through a unit of Big Mutants. The Orks also kept chopping and dismantled a unit of Chaos Space Marines, a unit of Mutants, and finally, a Blood Angels Tac Squad. These Orks finished the game by krumping a Blood Angels Predator with a Power Klaw.

Meanwhile, the Necrons and the Blood Angels mostly both hung back, waiting for the other to make a mistake and did relatively little through the game. Amazingly, though, the Necrons did take out a full unit of Terminators... a string of five ones (for saves) on the part of the Blood Angel Player sent these badboyz to an early and shocking grave.

The day was won - we beat our opponents with 2634 Victory Points to their 1124.

You don't see that every day!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 09, 2007 - 10:59 am:

Jon and I played this weekend as well. He did his Nids and my Necrons. As was expected once he got into close combat it was pretty much over BUT... It took 2 rounds of intense and I mean INTENSE close combat fighting to make me phase. I still had a full squad of warriors on the table. I knew I was going to lose cause my Necrons aren't usually good in CC but the first part of the second turn was awesome. I was able to desimate his 3 genestealer squads with gauss fire leaving all three under half there starting strength.

One of my Tomb Spiders killed one of his Carnifexs in CC we couldn't find a rule that said Monsterous creatures no armor save rule didn't apply to other Monsterous creatures. And the epic part was my Flayed Ones and two squads of warriors fighting whatr remained of one of his Genestealer squads, Hormagaunts, and Tyrinid Warrioirs, was a sick combination in there.

Final Taly was Nids-1997 points Necrons-1013

All in all was alot of fun, on the coming Nov weekend festivities I hope to instill in GF a healthy fear of my Necrons. Or maybe resurrect my Iron Warriors since they've released the new Choas marine codex.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Tuesday, October 09, 2007 - 11:28 am:

So, is that why none of us could get in touch with Jon? George was looking forward to seeing him this past weekend...

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 09, 2007 - 01:43 pm:

No, that wasn't it. Plus with our employer doing a disaster recovery test this past weekend Jamie had to work longer and we were both on call if anything unforseen happened. I could have gotten out of it but as I said it was really short notice for me. But fear not we didn't RP so Tristan is still alive and well :P

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 10:12 am:

Let's see if I remember the list for my chaos army here

Lord- (Special Iron Warriors lord Model) Terminator armor, servo arm, Bionics, combimelta
Retinue-4 Terminators mounted in a Land Raider

Troops
2 squads of 8 mounted in Rhinos

Elites
2 squads of 3 Obliterators (yes I can do that cause with 3rd edition Iron warriors ignored the 0-1 rule)

Heavy support
Predator
3 Defilers

I know it's a small army but I can dish out some real pain with the defilers and the Obliterators. The deilers can shoot the battle canon out to 72" so with one at each corner of the table and one the middle I have the entire table covered. And the Obliterators can form whatever weapon they think they need from Lascannons, autocannons, plasma guns, missle launchers and a few more things plus they can deep strike.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 10:22 am:

Looking forward to seeing this army on the table, Knight Hawk. How many points is it, would you say? Looks like 1500 to me, not bad at all.

Looking forward to getting some time in modeling and painting this weekend. I have three models out on my painting table who need attention - which one will I be drawn to work on first? Squiggoth, Buggy, or Ork Warboss? The WAAAGGHH must continue! WAAGGHH!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Actually thats 2000 points thats why GF considers it too small. I tend to agree but I love me some heavy support.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 03:07 pm:

To be honest, most of the time I play games of 1000 points or so. Anything bigger is quite a treat. Part of the reason is that some of the people I play with can only field 1000 points. Another reason is that I play a lot of multi-player games which seem to stretch out for 6-7 hours even at 1000 points.

As it goes!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 04:14 pm:

Well I really only play against GF and Jon so 2000 each side is how we usually go. I try to get 2000 point armys so that I can field any number up to that. All my necron posts up above except for the joke with Apoc are 2000 points.

If I did 3000 points of Necrons I'd add another 40 warriors to make my 4 squads a full 20 warriors each, 5 more Immortals to fill out that squad and the third wraith to fill out that one. I could instead of the Immortals and Wraith I could add a second Monolith.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, October 12, 2007 - 09:43 am:

That's cool. I can do 2000 or 3000 very comfortably. 4000 would become a stretch and I would have to do some fancy stuff to pull it off (ie I would need to bring 1 regular Ork Army and 1 Feral Ork army, that sort of thing). After double-checking my collection, I think 4000 would be difficult to do but not impossible... however, this would involve bringing a couple of models that are barely started, most notably 2 Squiggoths that need a LOT of love before they are finished.

Started painting that Warboss model last night - I got all psyched up after all our discussions and decided that he needs to be finished in time for our hangout. This should be no problem - I believe he will paint up fairly fast (a few nights). He's a mean looking Ork - really big and holding a GIANT axe.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Sunday, October 14, 2007 - 09:17 pm:

I have space enough for a good sized battle

I can throw up 3 side-by-side tables if we need the space. Usually though, I use my desert board that Jon helped me build. I'll come up with a scenario as to why this battle is happening, because I know Jon & Damien plan on bringing their fleets as well. We could make it a full multi-battle scenario with orbital battles determining what regions on the planet are held by whom, etc... rest assured, we will make it fun for all.

There will also be Magic, PC games, PS2 games, and also real-world interaction, like visits to the movies, malls, beach, whatever. I guess in the new hangout topic, people should pipe in and make suggestions as to what they would like to do. Time is a tickin, I need to spend some of it cleaning up the house so you guys can trash it again. ;)

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 09:15 am:

I never trash a place...I artfully rearrange ;P

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 10:01 am:

Sounds good to me! Can't wait for this! As you may have guessed, I am pretty psyched at the prospect of playing (possibly) the biggest private game of 40K I've played yet. The biggest I've played in recent history was 3000 points per side with 6 players. Sounds as if we are going to likely top that point value. I think just to make it interesting, I'll bring 3000 points of Orks - the largest army I've ever fielded! That should help to round out someone's side and will also provide a worthy antagonist for another.

Movies sound good, should be a blast. Won't be able to bring a computer, tho, for PC games :( but still willing to play if there is an extra. Because of the drive time (6-8 hrs) I probably won't show until the latter part of Day 1, but will come ready to party.

Other news - just yesterday, finished painting my NEW WARBOSS. This also rounds out my unit of Mega-Armoured Orks. NICE. He needs only a slight touchup, then he can be sealed. I also started working on my new Ork Buggy which is in its very early stages of painting - but may likely be finished in time for our big game.

Really, really psyched.

Sol

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 10:58 am:

Will the orbital battles be Battlefleet Gothic? I'd love to see how these are played.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 01:28 pm:

Yes it is BFG. I'll be bringing my Chaos Fleet as my Necron one is scattered and in disrepair. But I've always favored my CHaos fleet anyway cause of the fact that for 2000 points it's 12 cruisers with 6 escorts. That and unlike their Imperial and Space Marine equivalents they can fire alot farther so their a threat earlier than my opponents would like.

If you want an idea of what I mean the standered Imperial guns fire out to usually 45 CM where as my Chaos version fires out to 60 CM. GF will correct me if I'm wrong on the Imperial range exactly as it's been a LONG time since we've done anything BFG.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 03:10 pm:

Supercool, man! I can't wait to see a game of BFG played out. Sounds like a blast!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 04:16 pm:

It's a lot like watching a game of warhammer. There will be some really great moments surrounded by alot of boreing movement. Especially in this cause you don't want to stay still for long as you want to manuever to get the best fireing position to find the weakest armor and facings. It's easier to hit a ship flying away from you than at you. Oh and you almost never want to broadside.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 04:51 pm:

Would anyone object if I bring 2 armies? You know, like a Standard Ork army plus a Feral Ork Army? It could be one way to get to 3000 points.

I haven't heard from Big D re: the party, tho I dropped him an email. I might see him this coming week. Bryan and Luke sound as if they will be unavailable to join us for various reasons.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 11:42 pm:

Well we'll see with the new rules. I'm not even sure my army is still legal. Might have to do what Jon suggests and make a mark undivided army with I think the 20 Khorne beserkers and 10 1000 sons I have just sitting around. Hmmm have to wait and see when the codex comes in.

What it boils down to is if you are not playing a particular chapter and take the mark you can generally mix the units. As Iron Warriors though there is a rule that you can not include demons other than a Demon prince in the list. So what you'd be doing is playing a chaos army without any chapter special rules.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 09:13 am:

That sounds like a better deal - I mean, if you can have any of the available units you want! I wouldn't complain if you brought 2 smaller armies, either, and played them as if they were allies. For that matter, I wouldn't mind playing a smaller game.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 09:49 am:

Well i do have a 1500 point list for my Necrons and Iron Warriors made up I could ally them against 3000 points of your orks. Now if I remember correctly the chaos still fielded 2 Defilers...so 2 Defiliers with a strength 9 ap 3 cannon that shoots 72" and a Monolith with it's str 9 ap 2 partical whip...thats three large blast template weapons. *rubs hands together* Yes, yes I like this idea *evil grin*

Ok Jon and I have conversed on the subject of BFG this weekend and I not only found my rulebook but my wayward Necron fleet that was holding my Chaos battleship and the Planet Killer hostage. Both the Necrons and PK are in to far states of disrepair to field but the BS can be worked in so we are planning on around 3000 points of ships. This will be an epic battle I kid you not. On my side it's looking like 1 Grand Cruiser, 3 Heavy cruisers, 9 cruisers, and 6 escorts. Or 1 Battleship, 3 heavy cruisers, 9 cruisers, and 6 escorts.

I don't even want to think about the number of Tyranid ships 3000 points means.

Alright, I have nearly finished my Ork Buggy - in a frenzy of Ork Painting, I have nearly finished it in just 2 days. This has happened in spurts while waiting for tiles to dry, paint to dry, and the like. Really wanted to finish it yesterday, but I expect to finish it tonight. My Ork Horde is shaping up nicely for our coming NOV weekend.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 22, 2007 - 05:12 pm:

Hey GF Eric thought my monolith was wrong? I just found rules for the Necron Pylon. It has the same weapons except that the Partical Accelarator is range 12" to 120" str 9 ap 3 and does damage on the super tank level so it causes 1d3 structure points of damage. It also benefits from the living metal rule so no double dice for penetrating hits or redusing it's armor value of 14 all around and it can deep strike moving the other models out of the way like the Monolith :D

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - 09:25 am:

Ok I revamped my Fleet list so it works around my monster of a Battleship. Looks like this

1 Planet Killer
1 Desolator class Battleship
1 Vengence class Grand cruiser
1 Hades class heavy cruiser
1 Acheron class Heavy cruiser
3 Murder class cruisers
3 Carnage class cruisers
6 Idolator class escorts
Fleet Commander: Abaddon the Despoiler
Secondary Commander on the Desolator

What do you think of that GF?

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - 01:16 pm:

I really am looking forward to seeing a game of BFG played for real! Should be awesome. How many points is a standard game of BFG? I heard that you can download the rules online from GW - is that true?

Yesterday, painted my Ork Buggy a little more. Just a touch more, mind you, was out buying more paint (for the house, not for the Orks). So I should be able to finish this little sucker up tonight, this time REALLY. Will have to wait to seal him until tomorrow, though, most likely. That's because it is raining like nuts in NY today.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - 01:31 pm:

I believe so cause they don't produce it anymore really or it's really realy hard to find anything relating to it thats not on their site or Forgeworld.

Oh and BFG is like Warhammer so it depends on how many points you agree on. I've played as few as 500 points and as much as 3000. The thing is that the game doesn't have a FOC other than you need so many cruisers up to 12 before you can add heavier ships and you can have as many escorts as your points will allow so you can have an entire battle made up of 2000 points of Escorts (man that would be HUGE).

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - 03:35 pm:

Well I got the new Chaos book at work today and while I love it's look and layout they've taken away everything that made me play Iron Warriors. My list is now completely illegal and I have to rework it so they may not be fighting next weekend. Not really happy about it at all though GF will be happy to know part of it is a gimping of my Obliterators and making them heavy support choices and not elites, though any army can take them as all the heavy support choices.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 12:36 am:

I love games workshop. They arbitrarily decide what races are this week's flavor of the month and spiff them out real cool, then go around nerfing the other races so people will but the cool new product. Remember when space marines were cool and nigh unstoppable? Enter the Necrons. Remember when Eldar were cool and mysterious? Enter the Tau. Remember when Tyrranids used to crunch all they wanted? Well, we made more...

Damien, your fleet sounds good, but I can space more tonnage. I have a solid core of battlecruisers and excel at carrier-based tactics. Again, I challenge you: BRING IT ON! (that planet killer might cause some difficulty, along with your extended-range weapons. An open-space battle may not be my best choice of engagements...)

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 09:20 am:

I did a bit more reading and they also nerfed the Defiler, Predator, Made regular troopers more expensive, I can't make my Warsmith as he is modeled so thats now a paperweight (The Warsmith is as he was produced and has Bionic limbs and a Servo arm but neither are part of the Wargear list anymore). About the only good thing they did was lower the cost of a Land Raider by 30 points. I was sitting there trying to make a list with the models I have going, "D@mn them, Oh thats cool, D@mn them, Ah I like that, GOD D@MNED B$@%^^DS!"

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 10:07 am:

Yeah, I am sort of cringing at the thought of what they're going to do to MY Dex come January. I've heard several rumors - not good at all. Well, that's January, anyway, so I'll have one last mega-battle with you guyz using the current Ork Rules. Only fitting I think since my first battle with these rules was also at Fred's...

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 10:08 am:

And oh yeah, I finished painting my Ork Buggy! Tonight I seal it and it is ready to roll.

By Houdini (Houdini) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 10:35 am:

*sigh*

Even 2000 points per player is too much for me little tau army to pull off right now. I can barely and I do mean barely do a 1000.

How about a mini fight?

Four ork grots versus Aun'si! Yeah, I could win that one!

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 11:26 am:

Bry I have about 2000 points of tau you can borrow some if you want. I don't field it yet cause I'm missing some of my key pieces yet like the sniper squad 20 firewarriors and the new model lord. But otherwise I have a valid tau kroot mix if you want to try and put one together.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 11:27 am:

Otherwise I could put together a 500 point Necron army together for a little brawl.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

I'm sure we can work something out. And a smaller game is fine with me. Or we could do allies. Say, here's an idea - high roller gets Houdini as an ally... 4000 points on one side against 3000 on the other.

I'm sure we can work something out, NP.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 12:13 am:

ummm... unless otherwise stated in an officially sanctioned scenario, all points values will be equal, unless the larger point value happens to benefit ME. Sorry, house rule. :)

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 09:29 am:

Yeah well in that case the new Monolith Phalanx box has been released so my three Monolith army is possible.

In any case I have made up a few 500 and 750 point possabilities so as to allow Bryan to field his own army this will also allow us to have two games going at once as the smaller points value games will take up a lot less space.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 09:42 am:

Sounds good to me! I'm into it. I was designing an army in my head today on the way to work. Will have to get it down on paper this weekend. Knight Hawk, are you bringing 2 armies in order to come up with 3000 points? If so, I might also do so... but haven't decided.

I'll bring a 1000 point force also in order to be prepared for a smaller game. But really, since I'm bringing nearly my whole collection, it should be a breeze to whip up any smaller army list I think.

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 09:44 am:

Yeah I think I can scrape something together from the ruins of my Chaos army to field 1500 if not 2000 points.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 02:48 pm:

My army-building program is only good for imperial forces and their allies. Damien, do you have the chaos forces one? Also, my printer is broken, so we can't print out army lists here. We can view them on the computer though!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 02:54 pm:

Trust me, I can assemble lists practically in my head since I have all the Ork Points memorized. So I'll be good. And before I forget: House Rules on Special Characters? Are we allowed to field them? I have a few I wouldn't mind getting on the table...

Sol

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 03:05 pm:

I don't have any special characters save Cypher and he's unusible so it's up to the others.

GF yes I have the Enemies of the Imperium program but it's now useless as far as Chaos and the Tau are concerned, rules have changed way to much for the Chaos portion to be reliable.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, October 26, 2007 - 03:51 pm:

Whatdyathink, GF? Special Characters? Allowed?

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 02:29 am:

I don't mind using special characters. As long as you don't mind my sniper killing them first turn. :)

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Saturday, October 27, 2007 - 09:27 am:

I'm gonna stop at the store on my way back from this event for work I'm at and see if they don't have any I can use for either Chaos or Necrons.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 11:27 am:

Greyfox, catch the specials if you can!

Awesome. I'll be sure to bring a Special or two.

Knight Hawk, my special characters are shown right in the codex. Usually they aren't THAT special, but they are considered to be "hero" characters. Surprised you don't have any since you already have 3 armies!

Most of my special characters are not allowed in games under 2000 points. So this will be a treat.

Sol

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 11:42 am:

Well the model of the Nightbringer is hard to comby where I am. Also even if I had him no one would play against me with him since basically fields a Lascannon can't be instantly killed, and if models assault him they either get instantly pushed 2d6 inches back or he sucks the life out of them and they just die.

As for Chaos I had Cypher but he can't be used anymore and the others never fit into my army since they had specific marks I couldn't mix with.

My Tau I just recently started and finished this weekend so I'll have a 1500 point army to field.

Then theres my barely started 13th Company Space Wolves army.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 12:37 pm:

Haha, I would play against him! I told you, I am crazy. Nightbringer, huh? Who is he? One of the Ctan Gods?

That's exciting about your Tau. Houdini and I spent the weekend hanging out and working on some 40K modeling. We are psyched! Houdini assembled a few new recruits for the Greater Good. I am working on a massive Squiggoth. Sadly, he really only fits into a Feral Ork army, and so we shall not likely be seeing him this coming weekend. But I'll have to post up pics in the near future so that you can see how he is coming along. Worked on him for ten hours yesterday - I tell you, this guy will DEFINITELY be some time in the making!

Sol

By Houdini (Houdini) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

If 2000 points min per player is what you folk want then I guess I'm going to have to take Knight Hawk up on his offer to bring his tau force so I can supplement my army.

Come to think of it I don't really even have 1000 points of finished or built models. The one game I played last year (yes last year) at Sol's house required me to proxy a few models to accomplish the one thou. It's taking a while for sure.

I built a tau devilfish last year that this week is getting its final detail painting.

Bryan's special house rule.

The greater good rule.

If you lose big, just lie about it when you retell the story to your friends who weren't there to witness the battle. It works!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 04:15 pm:

Houdini,

I think what I shall do here is bring 2 Ork armies - one 2000 point army and one 1000 point army. This adds up to 3000 points in case of a BIG game (maybe someone will take me on for a BIG BATTEL) and I will also have a 1000 pointer for modest "quick" games and a 2000 for facing a slightly beefier army.

This seems like the way to go. Does that sound OK to everyone?

By Who is the (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 04:48 pm:

Actually Sol I'm bringing enough to field 3000 points of Chaos, 2000 points of Necrons, and 1500 points of Tau. I have smaller lists to facilitate Brian and so that while bigger games are going on we could have smaller quicker ones as well so no one gets too bored.

Brian I have to proxy one of my Necron squads that I haven't been able to procure yet so by all means do so. BTW my Tau commander looks like this.

Battle suit, Cyclic Ion Blaster, Plasma Rifle, Shield Drone, Hard wired Multi-tracker, and Stimulant Injector.

What that means for thoe who don't know is he has a 3+ armor 4+ invulnerable save, He can fire both weapons in one turn, and on a 4,5 or 6 he ignores any wounds he takes. The cyclic Ion Blaster is a Assault 5 weapon and the Plasma rifle is basically a plasma gun that doesn't get hot.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 02:27 am:

Jon picked up the Apocalypse rules, so we shall play at least 1 apocalypse battle this weekend. I am already putting together a force list of around 6000 points of Imperium forces and I think so is Jon. I think the consensus was Jon & Fred vs. all comers, and it is gonna be forces of the Imperium vs. the combined forces of aliens and heretics that everybody else can field... We'll work on a nice mega-scenario and have cool terrain as well. I am actually starting to get stoked about it!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 10:39 am:

Oh really? Apoc, eh? Well, that being the case, I will bring multiple Ork Armies. As long as someone has the Apoc Rules and Templates, I will be happy to do it. Awesome! I expect that my army will be between 3-4000 points then, I'll make it as awesome as possible. And maybe I should bring that Squiggoth after all and maybe my Feral Warboss as well.

Fred, I really respect your attitude! Wow, taking on all comers? Incredible. So Jon has a non-Xenos army? I like the idea of a massive team brawl. Let's do it. I'll bring the biggest Ork Force I can muster. Sounds as if I will need it. If Jon has the same number of minis you do, Fred, I can see your combined force being 12000 strong.

Been bringing home paper boxes from work - looks as if I am going to need at least one more. It will be quite a job to pack all these figures, but I can throw non-essentials (like sleeping gear, clothes, etc) out of the car before departing.

Now I am excited. Man, why can't it be THURS now?

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 03:45 pm:

Np Bryan I want to see how my new commander and sniper squads do :)

3 broadsides
sniper squad
4 or 5 gun drones
hammerhead

The NOV game we played was EXTREME! I have no idea how it would have turned out if we had continued playing for another couple of turns. But I found it all to be really satisfying - my first game of Apoc ruled! I am going to have to lay my hands on the Rulebook, too. It was too incredible to play only once.

What did everyone think of Apocolypse?

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, November 06, 2007 - 12:15 pm:

Yeah, now that I've got my Orks pretty nicely painted, I am thinking it might be time to work on my LOTR models. The Mines of Moria Boxed Set is a nice way to be "in" the game for someone who isn't interested in getting a lot more minis. Nobody I know plays LOTR and I am really not interested in ANOTHER mass combat collectible models game, but I am pleased at the idea of being able to play a simple scenario or two within the Mines of Moria (always was my favorite LOTR setting). I could see myself also collecting a Balrog and some Dwarves.

Of course, I am going to need to start painting my models first. They're all assembled - but I'd like to get them finished as well so I can have a "complete set."

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 03:14 pm:

Ok Ok, well I'm buying thee new defiler models so I can finish my Brass scorpion of Khorne and make a second one so I can have two of em. Then Jon and I are planning on drawing up plans for warlord Titans, Imperial for him and Chaos for me. Should make for some pretty intense battles. I believe Jon wants another Baneblade and I of course want one for my Iron Warriors. In this way I'll have 2 brass scorpions a baneblade and a Warlord Titan at my disposal.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:38 am:

That's AWESOME! I always thought the Defiler was the coolest model GW has - and I think the Brass Scorpion has to be even cooler!

THAT'S INCREDIBLE! Knight Hawk, I LOVE IT! Is this actually yours? Or is this a pic from the net? I give you kudos either way - a project like this is the pride and joy of any army.

Someday I will create an Ork Gargant - but have several other unfinished projects to work on first like Stompas and Squiggoths.

I recently picked up 8 more Stormboyz since these worked well in our Apoc game. I also got 2 more Ork Slavers and a Zzapp Gun. And one more Mega-Armoured Ork. All of these are on my modeling table in various stages of completion. These are likely the last models I will purchase before the new Ork Dex arrives in January.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 01:24 pm:

Nah not mine but it gives you an idea of the scale of what Jon and I plan on doing. Ours will be a bit smaller though but that thing is a monster at like 4 feet tall. I found it on a warhammer discusion sight googleing Titans.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 01:37 pm:

Yeah - please keep me posted on your project! Assembling materials will be the first step - that alone I think is the most challenging. Unless you have the skill to craft everything from scratch (wood? plastic?) which you might.

Best of luck on this ambitious project! This is probably the most difficult project you could ever attempt - but emerge victorious and you will be a true Master of 40K.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 01:46 pm:

On a side note I've been doing some rearranging and I found a box of Iron Warriors I'd forgotten about. This is good because they no longer make that set and I now have enough to replace my generic squad and have two official Iron Warriors squads.

I'm going to play a game of 40K at the local game store on Sunday - it will be an 1850 point game - looking forward to this one. And since I have cards already drawn up for my units, this should be a breeze to plan for.

The winner of this game gets a bunch of store credit - usually the winner is always the same - this one physics teacher who REALLY knows how to play! This is not to say I have no chance - I am pretty good - but this is a tournament event, so I will be running with the big boyz on this one.

A Scorpion made all of Brass. I especially like the giant buzz-saws.

I've seen a few with the buzz saws and I've never liked them, takes away from the scorpion look. My other complaint with this one is that he used the close combat claws for the legs except for the last 2 which looks uneven and just eh.

The Tau - Fish of Fury Maneuver

The Fish of Fury is a tactic that many of us have heard of. But what exactly is it? No, it’s not a Kung Fu aquarium movie, though you wouldn’t be far wrong! Most us know that it’s got something to do with Devilfishes, and Fire Warriors, and most of us would be right. But how does it actually work? Well, for those of you new to this I am going to explain what this is and how it works, while referencing the pages of the 40k rule book which you should read and understand in order to help you carry this out.

How I got new Orks
by: Sol

So anyway, somehow I ended up with extra Ork bodies, legs, and so forth. Everyone knows that the hardest parts to get yer hands on are the bodies and legs. But I had 5 sets of Legs forever when a friend gifted me with the contents of his Bitz Box. And I gained 8 more torsos when I bought the Stormboyz Boxed Set (they give you extra - you get 8 Stormboy Torsos and 8 regular). So YES - I had enough for 5 more Orks!

So I set to work building and found that - uh-oh, I was missing Ork Slugga Arms. You know the kind I mean - the Ork single-handed gun. I had 2, but needed 5! So what did I do?

I went to my FAV 40K board and asked to trade with other Ork Players. This one guy wanted some bald Ork heads and I had extras of these. So we just traded by snailmail. Now - YES! I picked up 8 more Slugga Arms. So that means I can finish all 5 Orks with 6 Slugga Arms left over.

So what to do with the extras? Well, with 6 extra Slugga Arms (and 3 extra Torsos) I could make, for example, 3 more Cyborks (I make mine without any legs). So I will be adding a full 8 extra Orks to my force. FOR FREE! NICE!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, January 14, 2008 - 01:13 pm:

So yes indeed, I got my new Ork Codex today. And I will say this - lots of tasty new things for Orks in it! The best part methinks is the fact that Orks now cost just 6 points instead of 9. And this book is at least twice as thick as our prior (9 year old) Codex - lots and lots to read about Da Orkses.

Found a great site today called the war store. They have minitures and bits at a lower than GW cost. Might want to give it a look for future Ork bits Sol. They also sell Forgeworld stuff at US Dollars but I don't know if it's cheaper or not. Give it a peep www.warstore.com

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, January 25, 2008 - 10:32 am:

Hey, Knight Hawk, thanks for sharing. It is always cool to hear about deals such as this since an Ork Army General needs all the help he can get. Who needs 10 Orks when you can have 14 for the same money?

I *just* bought a second Batallion Boxed Set like the one Fred got me for Xmas many years ago. This time it was 30% off. I couldn't resist - it was like 60 bucks or so.

Long live da Orks.
How's your army coming these days, Knight Hawk? Did you fiddle with that Brass Scorpion lately?

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, January 25, 2008 - 01:20 pm:

Well haveing found that site I can order the bits I need to convert it rather than an entire Defiler.

I've also started a Grey Knights army as well. So I'm now working on army 5 and maybe someday I'll finish army 3 which is my Space Wolves 13th Chapter.

So I hear that the new Warhammer 40K 5th Edition is on the way. Rumour has it that we will see it in May. The new Ork Codex (and presumably everything published after Black Templars) is 5th-edition ready (just as the 3rd Ed. Tau Codex was "4th Edition ready."

Will 5th have enough changes to make it worth it? That's what everyone is asking. The way vehicles work will be changed, presumably making them stronger. The rest I can't say - I get the idea that there will be few major changes, but who is to say?

I am happy to report that I have finally finished my next batch of Stormboyz. This brings me up to a total of 16 plus a Nob. I will begin hunting on the net to see if I can obtain an additional 3 in order to reach the max unit size of 20. I have succeeded with this sort of thing in the past.

And now it is time to decide upon a new Ork Project. I have opted to add Boyz to my unit of Orange Boyz - the unit given me by Greyfox long ago. That unit originally had 16 Boyz in it. Previously, I added 2 to come up to 18. Now I will be able to add 8 more which brings me to 26 and I will also be adding a Nob to get 27. Finally, I already have 3 Rokkit Launcha Boyz for 'Eavy Weapons which will bring me up to 30.

These guys I assembled over the weekend. They're getting primed tonight and afterwards the painting will progress.

WAAGGGHHH!

Peace out!

================

One day, a Space Marine came to see an inquisitor. The Space Marine said:
"Inquisitor, I have fought many battles against the foes of humanity, but only recently have I wrestled with daemons. I struck down a foul daemon prince, but before he fell, he told me that we would not be at the Emperor's side in the afterlife, but that there was only Chaos. You are of the Ordo Malleus; most learned in the ways of the Warp. I ask you, do we face the Emperor after death, or do we face Chaos?"

The inquisitor asked: "Who are you?"

The Space Marine replied: "I am Elpidius, an Ultramarine, an Honour Guard to the Lord Macragge himself."

The inquisitor said: "Ha, you, an Honour Guard? What ruler would be so desperate as to engage you as a guard? You are scrawny and weak, and your face is as that of a daemon of Nurgle."

The Space Marine became angry at hearing this, and drew his power sword in wrath.

The inquisitor said: "Ah, so you have a power sword! How poorly crafted it is! It looks so blunt, I doubt you could cut my head off with it if you tried!"

The Space Marine became angrier, and placed his power sword at the inquisitor's neck, growling.

The inquisitor said: "Thus you face Chaos."

At this moment, the Space Marine understood the inquisitor and resheathed his power sword.

The inquisitor said: "Thus you face the Emperor."

A Battle Report using the NEW Ork Codex

So I'm supposed to "play fair" against a bunch of Space Dorks. Whatever. Time to break out the Velveeta and CHEEZE my list out to the max. Digging through my Ork codex, it takes me all of two seconds to find the perfect solution - Grots. HAHAHAHAHA! Who would have thought it, right? But for less than six hundred points I can take ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY GROTS. That's a TIDAL WAVE of little green psychopaths that are going to sweep across the board and slaughter everything in their path. What's better, I take a Slaver for every 10 grots, so that's another 18 models who CAN'T be picked out of the grots? HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!?!?! I'm giving every Slaver a grot-prod as well. This thing is SOOOOO unbalanced, I have no idea how it even got into the codex. It will wound ANY model on a roll of 4+. SUCK IT, WRAITHLORDZ!!! Of course, I'm not facing 'lordz in this fight, but grot-prods are still so awesome it's worth taking them anyways.

As for tactics – who cares? My opponent will be so terrified at the sight of TWO HUNDRED models on the table – one of them the MKX – that there is no need to get fussy about deployment or flanking or anything wussy like that. I simply need to point my army at the enemy and let slip the grots of war! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm going to have to pack a box of tissues along with my minis so that when I BUTCHER my opponent's forces, I'll be able to keep his tears of sorrow off my models.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, April 07, 2008 - 09:02 am:

I have one word for you Sol...Ordnance. With that many models they''l inevitably be tightly packed so scatter really won't be much of a concern so of course place marker lots of dead grots.

Does the slaver make them fearless?

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Monday, April 07, 2008 - 09:42 am:

Well, ah, it is really more like an April Fools joke as you might notice when seeing what was proxied. And of course, the Orks lost this one. Of course with their vehicular ace-in-the-hole, I have to say the Space Marine win was still an achievement!

;)
Sol

PS - Slavers don't give fearless, but they do make it less likely that the units will run for it.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Monday, April 07, 2008 - 11:21 am:

Ah I see, they block almost everything here at work so I've stopped bothering to check links while here and didn't check Lev this weekend.

Heh it wasn't blocked and after reading I see what you mean. I was reading the MKX description wondering if it was legal at all, but as a joke I found it funny and what better model to represent a cheeze unit than a monolith :D

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 - 09:29 am:

Ha ha, yah, that's too bad that they block all that stuff. I mean, what's a little harmless link-reading to get one through the day? Some read the news online and that's OK. I do not read the news which is depressing. I read LEV.

Anyway! Yeah, that thing was probably created using the VDR (Vehicle Design Rules) which can be unbelievably unbalanced. But it still went down, didn't it?

And yes, Ork 4th Edition does allow me to have a Looted Monolith (sort of). It's called a Looted Wagon and isn't allowed to maintain anything special that it originally had in its parent army. I suppose it is just a modeling thing which is too bad, but on the other hand, I can add just about anything to my Ork Army this way - even Tau Pihrannas and other stuff like that which was totally not allowed before.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 - 04:38 pm:

Hey I just realized I never posted about my new chaos lord model. I got my hands on the new terminator lord model. It's HUGE, the whole thing stands taller than one of my Obliterators.

SO the stats now are as follows (as well as I can remember while still at work anyway)

Bilius the Vile
Terminator armor
Mark of Khorn
Twin linked bolter
Bloodfeeder deamon weapon (axe)

so he is s5 t5 ws5 bs4 w3 i5 att3+2d6 save 2+/5+

Yes he gets 3+2d6 attacks and its considered a power weapon so it's pretty much instant death. I roll well enough and he can take out an entire 10 man squad in one turn.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 - 04:41 pm:

oh and he's fearless as well. He basically leads a squad of 20 Khorn beserkers so thats a scary Close combat squad.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Wednesday, April 09, 2008 - 10:00 am:

Congrats on your Terminator Lord! He sounds AWESOME. Once he's painted up, be sure to upload a pic!

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, April 09, 2008 - 10:52 am:

Well what tempers his attacks is that with all deamon weapons if you roll a one on the check the lord takes a wound and does no attacks. Normally it's a single d6 but the bloodfeeder is special and gives 2d6. So the min number of attacks is 7 and the max is 15.

ORK VS TAU
==========

Notice from the TAU propaganda ministry:

Allthough the source of this battle report has an
obvious pro-ork bias and will state that he won a huge victory, it was in fact a moral victory for the tau who did alot of butt kicking and made some of the orks cry.

For the greater good of course! :)

I have to admit that the pictures on that Battle Report came out lots better than I thought they would. My camera does not have a close-up feature... its effective range is probably 12".

This was a pretty awesome game I must admit.

By Houdini (Houdini) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 12:29 pm:

It was a good 40k game on Sunday for sure. Tony and me were pretty evenly matched.

Still I wish more cheese was available for the TAU. We shoot and we have good armored vehicles.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 12:31 pm:

What kind of cheese do you like the best? You know, now that I think about it, you didn't put your Crisis Suit Team on the table. Are they still under repair from a prior dropping mishap?

O'Kuru really rocked the house by taking out the Ork HQ and also flaming tons of Orks. That was pretty cool.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 12:33 pm:

And yes, technically the battle ended in a Draw, but on the Ork Board I said that Orks won because in my mind Orks always win.

By Houdini (Houdini) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 01:03 pm:

I was going to say, thats not enough cheese for me! Give the tau everything dammit. :)

Here are a few of my "Game realism gripes about 40k"

1. If I have a flame thrower or guns or whatever naughty missile weapon I am carrying, and I get jumped/attacked by a horde of orks, you bet your arse I'm going to engage the flamethrower as I'm beating them over the head with it.

In other words, if you are attacking me with your sword, why would I throw a punch at you when I have a gun in my hand. I'm going to shoot you between the eyes if I can right?

FYI, please don't lecture me about simplified and fair game play. I know the reason why its not allowed, but I don't have to like it.

2. Shooting into troops locked in combat. You can't do it.

That sucks.

Friendly fire happens in war. And strategic casualties happen in war. If I want to sacrifice a pawn unit to win the war, that should be an option for me as the battlefield commander.

I kill my guys and your guys, eh. What are you complaining about if my unit dies you get the VP's from it. The deterrent against shooting into combat is the risk of losing VP's to friendly fire. I don't think there should be a rule against it however. If you are stupid enough to kill your own troops to kill the enemy, so be it.

I'm interested in seeing if anyone will defend GW on this lame arse rule, what possible gameplay reason could their be to not allow this?

The only one I can think of is the same reason they give bonus attacks on the charge, GW has a BIAS towards close combat fighting and they prefer people to kill units hand to hand, so they give plusses to attack and a bull •••• protection scheme to allow your enemy to not care about the line of firewariors near by giving his pathfinders cover fire. "But boss won't they shoot us in the back when we attack these guys over here." "No, the rules prevent that Billy."

"Oh thank goodness."

Yeah, ok. For moral armies maybe, but would choas follow such a limited morality? Would orks?

Would tau not kill a friendly unit to take out a enemy unit for the greater good?

I rest my case.

Yes, I have a shooting army so I want advantages to shooting. So what? Do you see how many attack dice orks and nids get when charging? Honestly people.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 01:31 pm:

Well 'nids I can see getting the advantages in CC as they are mostly a CC army. But I agree with you as a Chaos player my Lord would have no problem with haveing a defiler drop a battle cannon round into a close combat situation. Especially if it involves demons as there are millions more to summon.

Other than people whineing about self inflicted losses all the time I see no other reason. I mean I had a game against Jon where his Wraithlord assaulted my squad of Obliterators. My Vindicator opened up on a small squad of Fire Dragons with it's Demolisher canon. The shot drifted right into the CC and killed the Wraithlord and my remaining Obliterator. I thought it was funny as h'ell and kept playing.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 02:52 pm:

Shooting guyz in the back is a time-tested way of war. Now, if the Tau can't sharp-shoot Orks in the back (even during combat) I'd be surprised. Why? Well, because Tau would be like Legolas - except for 40K!

=======

A Quote from the 40K board - membership has its priviledges!

This is long overdue, but I just wanted to give a hearty thanks to a lot of the vets on this forum for the advice and critiques given to me over the past year. While 40K is a game that is almost "Othello-esque" (minute to learn - lifetime to master), the tips and tricks given here on this forum has been spot-on. Kudos!

Without being too generic, I will offer my testimonial and end with advice to newbies. I play in a group of vets who have been playing this game for over 10 years or so. Needless to say, I was squashed and monkey-stomped to to a 0-31 record. Humbling for sure, considering I am also a chess nerd and RTS gamer. Thought I would do better. They were helpful and offered advice readily, but I thought it cheesy to ask, "well gee, how do I beat you?" I needed to learn differently. Long story short, I found this site.

After reading lists and listening to advice, I am now undefeated in my last 6 games. One of the vets I play with is kind of a "that guy" and now tools his lists to specifically beat me - oh well, there's always one... But we still have fun!

Finally, my advice to other newbies: get the BBB and read it. A lot of this advice is squat without the rules.

Thanks again!

Talk to them, tell them how good it feels to be in a new dice box, how they have it good compared to other dice. Then tell them that they are the best, and most obedient dice you've ever had. Then tell them that getting hit with a hammer or melted down to a liquid doesn't feel very pleasant at all, and if they'd like to keep their shape, they'd remain the most loyal dice you've ever had.

When in game, if you roll one and it gives you the result you want, pet it, put it to one side with a small compliment like "Good job, take a break". Then pull out one of your other dice and say "he did a good job, will you?" and roll it. If it does the job, repeat. If not set it aside for punishment. Remember not to be too harsh, after all, dice have feelings too and maybe a small nudge is enough to get it to behave for the rest of it's lifetime. However, after a particularly bad game where all your dice prove your to be rebellious, set them down in a line, pick one randomly as an example. Then carry out your threat. In this way the dice know that you weren't kidding when you told them to perform. Tell them you'll buy a new set of dice if you have to. Then tell them you love them and let them know that you only want to best for them. If they still misbehave, melt them one by one until they do behave. If they don't, buy new dice, and show the new dice what happened to the old ones.

Rinse and Repeat, when you've found your lucky dice, treat them will love and respect, lucky dice are hard to find, but when found their luck may run out unless exercised and trained regularly. Consult your Doctor before training dice, dice training isn't for everyone and may cause unwanted side effects such as melted pools of dice, hammered fingers from missing the dice, chronic rage, dementia and others.

Um...whoa.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 11:06 am:

Houdini, I tried your idea online - here's the topic header:

So you know the game disallows firing into CC. Their explanation about "no matter how evil an overlord you are, you won't" actually makes it WORSE since half of us like to PRETEND we're evil overlords when playing. And even though the book is all like, "Troops wouldn't fight for a general like that for long," I'm all like, "Yes they would - they're plastic models, they have no choice, and if they tried anything I'd hit them with a heavy mallet to keep them in line."

Some races, like Eldar and Tau, have to be the best Sharpshooters in the Galaxy - you think they CAN'T shoot their foe in the back while he's charging their buddies? I think they could, even in the middle of the night using only marker lights and nightvision goggles as their guide.

What do YOU think? Do you allow it in your games as a house rule? Or is this rule a good idea?

People who want to shoot the enemy during CC... are they visionaries or whiners?

How can the rules be changed to allow it, OR should they not be changed in order to preserve rules that WORK?

Ideas?

(See what they said here):

"no matter how evil an overlord you are, you won't" Oh h'ell yeah I would, give you a great example. My plans for a 100 warrior necron army, I mean right there I have so many troops I'd have no compunctions shooting them. I have LOTS more plus they'd most likly stand back up. Chaos wouldn't care as long as they win.

"Troops wouldn't fight for a general like that for long," Wow this is the lamest excuse I've heard. The IG shoot soldiers for running away, I mean come on. The necrons are programed to follow orders no matter what, the Orks are too stupid and scared of the Boss to not follow, Chaos obey the dark gods and if the Lord says die they do, Dark Eldar revel in death. The only ones that would question it would be the Tau, Eldar, and Marines.

GW's reasoning for the whole shooting/close combat thingy is that when in close combat, an attack is an attack is an attack... In the maelstrom and chaos of hand-to-hand melee, all attacks are treated equally, whether you are using your boltgun, a dagger, your flamer, or the butt-end of a rocket launcher, you are ATTACKING your enemy. For simplicity & game-balancing purposes, a knife does as much damage as a lascannon, but then, SO WHAT? also, the whole thing of shooting into close combat: there are plenty of players with house rules that allow it. And for those of you believing there is an advantage to a close-combat oriented army, I offer the perspective from a mostly shooty army: they still have to GET TO YOU to kill you, and the WHOLE TIME they are advancing, I am killing them. THE END ;)

PS: wow, I've been gone a long time. LOL!

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 09:58 am:

Hey big guy, you have been gone a little while - nice to see you back in the fold! Are you gonna be playing a little 40K this summer? Perhaps 5th Edition? And any plans to lay paws on the upcoming Starter Set (I am told this will contain Orks and Space Marines - ah, brings back memories).

I am still planning an Apoc Event for later in the summer, but who knows when. I expect August and details will be forthcoming. But first I have to get some drywalling in my basement done - a project I have been saving for a whole YEAR for! Then I will be able to declare the basement finished and the gameroom again OPEN!

By Houdini (Houdini) on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 03:05 pm:

GF it's easier for you to "take the lumps" with the rules playing space marines because "shooty" or not they are decent in close combat.

Short of my elite troops, my basic troops don't even remotely stand a chance in close combat. I firmly disagree that a "knife" should be equivalent to a gun in close combat. If anything, I would have a BETTER chance of killing something with a gun if I'm right on top of it then if its away at a distance, and the fact that the rules don't reflect this reality of combat actually has me more then a little pissed.

I also do believe you should be able to shoot into your own troops. Yes, it complicates the rules. Yes it works both ways and can actually hurt you.

But I'd prefer having the flexibility also since most CC oriented races get MULTIPLE attacks per round in CC (4 attacks for orks without the charge WTF???? Especially with the numbers and fearless factor it sucks.) Versus my 1 or two max attacks shooting, i think its a fair gimme to let me blow them away in CC or engaged in CC at range. Yes, I'm saying my WS should be as good as my BS.

"But bryan its all about tactics.. you can win with tactics."

What a line of BS.

I got to go play 5th Edition WH40K at the local gamestore during 5th Edition Midnight Madness. I am happy to report that I brought home a win for the Orks as well as $10 Store Credit.

Any other opinions out there on the new rules? Anyone looking forward to the new Apoc expansion? Link to that here in case you have not seen it.

I completed the Nightbringer last night for my Necron army and will be painting him as soon as I can replenish my supplies. The list now looks like this for my Necrons

HQ- The Nightbringer C'tan
Elite- 5 Immortals
Elite- 10 Flayed Ones
Troops- 10 Warriors
Troops- 10 Warriors
Troops- 10 Warriors
Troops- 10 Warriors
Fast Attack- 3 Destroyers
Fats Attack- 2 Wraiths
Heavy Support- 2 Tomb Spiders
Heavy Support- 1 Monolith

That's 64 models all but the NB, Monolith and spiders can stand back up. Not too bad for 2000 points, and the only models I'm missing are the Flayed Ones.

See ya on the battlefield.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 09:57 am:

Nice work, Warsmith! I was lucky enough to get my hands on some Blackreach Orks. I am also currently working to finish my Squiggoth.

Sounds like your Necrons are coming along great - and you get definite bragging rights for the Nightbringer. Can't wait to see him.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 11:03 am:

Well the store by me finally had one in stock so I snapped it up. Was afraid that since some of the joints are on the smaller side it'd be hard for them to stay together, but I was wrong. When I get home I'll look into posting all his special abilities, he has somewhere around 10 I think.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 01:58 pm:

It is good that you got one. I have heard rumors that it will be discontinued soon. Not sure if that is so. If it is, it is because FW is issuing a replacement model. But I can't say for sure.

Yours will be a fine collector's piece, Damien, which will strike fear into your foes' hearts.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 02:57 pm:

Maybe Jon's already got an Eldar unit that can insta-kill it if I fail my Inv save or something.

Hmm wouldn't surprise me if they did that to me, it would be my luck I finally got one and now they put out a plastic version.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 03:06 pm:

Oh as games go I've been favoring my Chaos lately and on Sat proved once again why Khorne Berserkers are to be feared. I set 20 of them after 2 squads of Imperial Stormtroopers and a Tactical squad of marines. The berserkers wiped out the Stormtroopers and were going at it with the Marines. It wasn't a bloodless battle and the stormtroopers did kill a few KB's so it was fun but when I charge in with them I'm plus 1 to both my str and Int and each has 3 attacks. By the time I got into close combat I only had 16 KB's but that was still 48 attacks at str 5 int 5. And being Fearless they never ran away. Of course I paid for it with GF decimating my Thousand Sons on the other side of the table. Man I was rolling alot of 1's and 2's.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 09:55 am:

Warsmith,

Yah, re: FW model, just a rumor, but I seem to remember that it will be one of the C'tan Gods. Maybe it isn't the Nightbringer - but I think it is. FW usually puts out Resin models, and I am guessing that this new offering (we won't know more till the new Cron Codex comes out) is going to be possibly a huge model that will serve well in Apocolypse games.

As for me, planning to hit the local Gamestore this weekend to join in on this year's 'Ard Boyz Tournament. Sadly, I missed out last year. I need to come up to speed with the new 5th Edition rules fast, though, and also with my new Codex! I will be at a disadvantage, but the way I see it, who's going to have an easy time with 2500 points of Orks anyway? It will take almost every model I have just to reach 2500 - especially since Orks all cost only 2/3s the original value. Also I can't bring any scratchbuilds like my Battlewagons or Squiggoth (that's Apoc anyway) so it is gonna be Troops, Troops, Troops. Over 120 Ork Boyz. Maybe a unit of Grots. Nobs. Meganobs. Ghaz. I'll have it all. Stormboyz. Burnaboyz. Warbuggies. Bikes. Nothing left out. The Force Org Chart is my enemy because it stops me from bringing even MORE to the fray. Game is on SAT - if I am a bit lucky and also very smart, I may even walk out with a free box of Orks. We shall see!

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:53 am:

Houdini,

I read the backstory on Farsight as well - very very interesting! I am quite excited about this newcomer to the galactic scene after reading it. Pirate or secret ace of the Tau? Only time will tell!

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:55 am:

Sol have you seen the new boxed set with Marines verses Orks? The ork side gets a squad of Nobs, a Boss, 3 or 4 copters, and a bunch of boys. The whole box is $50 but both sides have stuff thats worth 3-4 times that amount normally AND it comes with the 5th edition rulebook without the fluff. If a kid hadn't taken the second one I would have scraped up enough for that as well as the Nightbringer.

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 01:00 pm:

Hey Warsmith,

Yes, I did see Assault on Blackreach. HOT! At the gamestore, I found a guy who was selling a box of Blackreach that had TWICE as many Orks in it (no marines) for $50. So I jumped at it. I *also* am getting an additional shot of Orks from this guy I know on the net who was willing to give it to me in exchange for some Space Marine Codexes I had. Honestly, I am going to see if I can even snag some more Blackreach. This box is incredible and will keep me working on Orks for a long time.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 01:37 pm:

Nice. We'll have to have at some point a battle between your Orks and my Necrons, 2000 points each side.

Good thing my guys living metal shells don't rust from the drool ;).

Yah, Damien, I keep on dreaming about hosting an Apoc party at my place in NY. Trouble is, my house continues to remain a total clutter/mess and I have no room to put people up.

Still, this may happen in the future. Fred threw such an awesome one (1 year ago, wow) that I've wanted to do one ever since. Now that I'm going to be a dad, tho, my time is slightly more limited. :)
