Dave Szott has had a life and career that most people only dream of obtaining. Hailing from Clifton, New Jersey Dave has always known what he wanted.
Dave remembers an assignment that he had when he was in third-grade. He was to drawn a picture of what he wanted to be when he grew up....what did he draw?? Dave drew a New York Giants football player, everyone laughed. They're not laughing now, but he knew all along that this is what he wanted to become.

In high school, he earned four letters in wrestling (as heavyweight), lettered 3 times in football and was even team captain his senior year. He was an excellent wrestler. He placed 4th in the 1986 National Junior Freestyle Tournament and won three Group Four state titles and even was selected as an All-American athlete in wrestling and football.
Now it was on to Penn State. He started his freshman year as an offensive guard (the position he now plays for the Chiefs) and later moved to defense but not before Sports Illustrated picked Dave as the fourth-best freshman of the 1986 class. His sophomore and junior years he spent playing nose tackle nailing 41 tackles and 1 sack. For his senior year it was back over to the offense and reclaim his position at guard. He topped off his college career by playing in the 1990 Senior Bowl. It was while he was at Penn State that Dave became aware of a postition as a strength coach that would interest his older brother Kevin. Now Kevin is a whole other story. He played Divison III football and earned a Silver medal in the 1992 Barcelona Paralymics in Judo. Pretty impressive for anybody, but more impressive for Kevin since he's totally blind.
So now Dave plowed through Penn State in only fours years but didn't graduate, he was 9 credits short of his degree in Political Science. He didn't have a 'redshirt' season which would have given him an extra year to complete his studies. The NFL beckoned and he was anzious to fulfill the dream he had in third grade - to be a professional football player. Dave vowed he would return to finish his degree six years later.
Drafted by the Chiefs in the 7th round (same year as Tim Grunhard), Dave hit the ground running. On the field he played in all 16 games as a rookie and earned All-Rookie honors from just about everyone. Off the field he played just as hard. Since he was drafted the same year as Tim, they became fast friends. They even were roommates for their first two years as Chiefs. "We ran the streets hard, Thursdays were our big nights for drinking." Then Dave began to feel like there was something missing. "I reached my ultimate goal, playing in the NFL, and my life was still empty." He found what he was looking for, he found Christ. "Christ gave me a purpose in life, and it wasn't just making money, the playoffs, the Super Bowl, success and women. It's not all about that. It's about being a good witness and showing people you can be a good Christian and a good football player, a great father and a great husband."
[Note: This page is not meant to preach to anyone. I don't like it when people flaunt their beliefs in my face and I'm not going to do it here. It's just that religion and Christ are such valued and important parts of Dave's life that I had to mention them. I have the utmost respect for Dave and his family and I also respect his beliefs. Nuff said.]
In 1994 (the best I can determine) Dave married the love of his life, Andrea. In early 95, Dave & Andrea became the proud parents of a son, Shane. Within a few months they noticed a problem. Shane wasn't developing as he should have. It was a very long year of testing and frayed nerves to discover that Shane had Cerebral Palsy. (complete story on Shane)
In May of 96, Dave decided it was time to complete that degree from Penn State. He packed up everything and the three of them moved into his brother Kevin's house so he could knock off 6 of the 9 credits he needed to graduate. The final 3 credits he was able to complete through a correspondence course since he was needed back in Kansas City for training camp. He did it. All that was left was the graduation ceremony itself, but there was a slight problem. Graduation took place the same day that the Chiefs a preseason game which he couldn't miss. Kevin to the rescue, he stood in for Dave at the ceremony so Dave wouldn't miss the game.
As a result of Dave's brother Kevin and his son Shane, the Szotts have been very active with charity work and in particular the "Szott for Tots" campaign which benefits the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired and Children's TLC (Therapeutic Learning Center) which Shane attends.
Now, Dave and his family live in the quiet countryside of Greenwood, Missouri.
